How much data you actually need
Plan on very little or none at all for the whole leg, and keep anything that genuinely needs a connection for before you enter or after you leave the country.
When you land
Ashgabat (ASB) is the main gateway, with domestic airports at Turkmenabat (CRZ), Turkmenbashi (KRW), Mary (MYP) and Dashoguz (TAZ). Overland, travellers usually use Farap from Bukhara, Shavat towards Dashoguz from Khiva, and the Iranian posts around Sarakhs and Bajgiran. By sea, a Caspian ferry runs from Baku into Turkmenbashi.
Where coverage changes
Distances here are long and run mostly through the Karakum desert. Ashgabat to the Darvaza crater and on towards Dashoguz takes hours with almost no settlements, and so do the runs to Merv and the Caspian coast. Assume that once you leave a town there is no way to reach anyone until you arrive at the next stop.

Why is there no plan for Turkmenistan?+
Because we do not carry a product for this country, there is nothing to buy in advance for it. The straightforward route is to ask your tour operator or hotel what is available locally, and to finish anything that needs the internet before you cross in. If you continue to Uzbekistan or Iran afterwards, arrange that next leg separately.
What should I prepare before crossing in?+
Download the whole country map, an offline translation pack and every document file while you are still on the Bukhara or Khiva side. Save your guide's and hotel's name, address and phone number as text on the device rather than only in email, and tell people at home in advance roughly how many days you will be hard to reach so nobody worries unnecessarily.

When does a Turkmenistan eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
