Ashgabat (ASB) is the main gateway, with domestic airports at Turkmenabat (CRZ), Turkmenbashi (KRW), Mary (MYP) and Dashoguz (TAZ). Overland, travellers usually use Farap from Bukhara, Shavat towards Dashoguz from Khiva, and the Iranian posts around Sarakhs and Bajgiran. By sea, a Caspian ferry runs from Baku into Turkmenbashi.

Distances here are long and run mostly through the Karakum desert. Ashgabat to the Darvaza crater and on towards Dashoguz takes hours with almost no settlements, and so do the runs to Merv and the Caspian coast. Assume that once you leave a town there is no way to reach anyone until you arrive at the next stop.

What should I prepare before crossing in?+

Save your guide's and hotel's name, address and phone number as text on the device rather than only in email, and tell people at home in advance roughly how many days you will be hard to reach so nobody worries unnecessarily.
