What AlUla is like on a phone

AlUla is a region of sandstone valleys in the north-west where tombs carved thousands of years ago stand out in the desert. People come to walk the archaeological sites, cycle through the oasis and look at the stars. Everything is far apart, and many sites are visited by advance booking with the site operator's own shuttle. Coverage clusters around the old town, the hotels and the visitor facilities; in the deeper canyons and along the desert roads it drops out for long stretches.

When you land

AlUla airport (ULH) takes mainly domestic flights from Riyadh and Jeddah, on a schedule that changes with the season — check before you plan. It is twenty to thirty minutes to the accommodation areas on a straight desert road. Switch the line on before leaving the aircraft, since many properties sit outside town and the pickup has to be confirmed with them. The alternative is driving from Madinah, several hours with long stretches of nothing, which needs planning for fuel and daylight.

Where coverage changes

The old town, the main roads and the hotel areas work normally. The change comes when you turn onto the access roads inside the archaeological areas and into canyons walled by high rock, where the line weakens or vanishes until you are back on flat ground. Stargazing sites and desert camps typically have nothing, by terrain as much as by design. On a hike into a narrow canyon, assume you are out of contact for the whole time you are inside.

What a day here costs in data

Daily use is lower than people expect, roughly 500MB to 1GB, because you spend long periods with no service and most of the day walking. The real consumption is uploading photos once you are back at the hotel, which can jump to around 2–3GB in one evening if you have shot a lot. Save entry tickets, shuttle times and the area map offline every morning — once you leave town you will not be able to open them.

• Hegra — The main rock-cut tomb site, visited only on booked tours with the operator's vehicles; inside the area the line is patchy, so save your ticket and meeting time before leaving the hotel.
• AlUla Old Town — The restored mud-brick village, now shops and restaurants, lively in the evening and reliably connected; a good place to sort bookings and uploads before heading out to where there is nothing.
• The oasis & its cycle paths — Date gardens threaded with shaded walking and cycling paths; mostly covered, though it thins under the thickest palms — agree where you are returning the bicycle before you set off.
• Elephant Rock & the stargazing ground — The elephant-shaped outcrop people visit at dusk and stay at after dark; the line is thin and sometimes absent, so fix a pickup time and do not count on ordering a car from there.

Day trips out of the city

• Khaybar — Two hours south to volcanic rock fields and an old oasis; the road is straight but the line is gone for long stretches, so fuel up first and tell your hotel when you expect to be back.
• The Sharaan canyons — A reserve entered only on a booking with the site operator; the access is unpaved and inside the canyons there is no service at all, so leave your plan with someone and stay with the guides.
• Madinah by road — Several hours south across open desert, with long blank stretches and service stations far apart; travel in daylight, carry water, and download the whole route before you go.
