What is the UK ETA, and do Thai travellers need one?

Resposta rápida

  • The UK ETA, or Electronic Travel Authorisation, is an online permission for nationals who do not need a visa to visit the UK.
  • Thais need a Standard Visitor visa, not an ETA, because Thailand is on the UK list of countries that require a visa.
  • A Thai passenger changing planes without passing UK border control (airside) does not need a visa, but passing through border control does.

The UK ETA is an electronic travel authorisation for people who do not need a visa to visit the UK. Thailand is on the UK visa national list, so Thai passport holders apply for a Standard Visitor visa on gov.uk instead of an ETA. If you hold a Thai passport and plan to enter the UK, the visa route is the one that applies to you.

What is the UK ETA and who needs one?

The Home Office describes the ETA as permission to travel to the UK for people who do not need a visa. It was rolled out in 2025 for eligible nationalities, first outside Europe and then in Europe. People who already hold a UK visa or other UK permission do not need an ETA.

Why do Thais apply for a visa, not an ETA?

Under the UK Immigration Rules Thailand is on the visa national list, and the gov.uk tool "Check if you need a UK visa" tells Thai tourists that they need a visa. The ETA is built for visa-free nationalities only, so it does not stand in for a visa. Use the visa checker with your own passport details to be sure.

  • Apply for the visa on gov.uk and book VFS Global, as set out in the visa guide.
  • Do not pay sites offering to "do your ETA" for you.
  • Once you hold an eVisa, use your UKVI account as the visa guide explains.

If you travel with friends of another nationality, do not assume their steps match yours, because the rules depend on each person's nationality and travel document. A friend with a visa-exempt passport may need an ETA while you need a visa, so start your own preparation early and check each person's requirement separately on gov.uk.

How do you avoid lookalike sites?

Many lookalike sites copy the ETA or visa pages and add service charges. Always start from gov.uk, check that the address ends in gov.uk, and never send passwords or card details through links received in messages. Only the official site and the official VFS Global booking page are needed for a Thai visa application.

Do Thais need a visa to transit through the UK?

GOV.UK says a Thai national changing flights without passing through UK border control (airside) does not need a visa, because Thailand is not on the Direct Airside Transit Visa list. A Thai who passes through border control, for example to change airports, collect bags or stay overnight landside, needs a Visitor in Transit visa or a Standard Visitor visa.

How do ETIAS and Ireland affect Thais?

The UK is outside the EU and outside Schengen, so a UK visa does not allow entry to Schengen countries and a Schengen visa does not allow entry to the UK. The EU's ETIAS is only for travellers who do not need a Schengen visa. Thais need a Schengen visa, so ETIAS does not apply to them, and no exact start date was confirmed on the date of checking, so see the EU's official site.

The Republic of Ireland is a separate country with its own visa rules, and Thais normally need an Irish visa. However, Ireland's Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme lets a Thai who holds a UK short-stay visit visa, and who first entered the UK on it, visit Ireland for under 90 days and only until their UK permission ends. Check that the programme is still running before you book.

How does internet access help when checking visas or transiting?

Using the gov.uk visa checker, opening e-tickets and airline emails, and watching flight status all need internet. Airports have Wi-Fi airside, but free connections can be slow when crowded, and public Wi-Fi carries security risks. A data plan activated before you land gives you a backup for boarding passes and gate changes. Check the plan's country list includes the United Kingdom, because a Europe plan may not.
