Melbourne itinerary for a first trip: 3, 5 or 7 days, where to stay and how to get around

إجابة سريعة

  • Three days covers Melbourne's main areas: the CBD, Southbank, the Queen Victoria Market area, Fitzroy and St Kilda. Five and seven days add day trips.
  • First-timers mostly stay in or near the CBD, because the Free Tram Zone and the rail and tram network make every area easy to reach.
  • Melbourne works well for solo travellers because trams and trains link the main areas and accept contactless payment.

A Melbourne itinerary of three days covers the main areas: CBD laneways and Federation Square on day one, Southbank and the Queen Victoria Market area on day two, then Fitzroy and St Kilda on day three. With five or seven days, use the extra days for trips outside the city. Stay in or near the CBD.

How should you split a 3-day Melbourne trip?

The easiest three-day plan is built by area, so you do not cross the city repeatedly. Visit Melbourne, the Victorian tourism body, points visitors to trams as the main way to get around the city.

اليومMain areasHighlights
اليوم 1CBD and Federation SquareLaneways, cafes, the Yarra riverbank
اليوم 2Southbank and the Queen Victoria Market areaRiverside walk, the market, multicultural food
اليوم 3Fitzroy and St KildaVintage shops, street art, beach and sunset

On day one, wander the CBD laneways and rest at Federation Square, right beside Flinders Street Station. On day two, cross the river to Southbank and take a tram to the Queen Victoria Market area; check the market's trading days on its website before you go. On day three, tram to Fitzroy in the morning and St Kilda in the afternoon for a sunset by the bay.

What should you add for 5 or 7 days in Melbourne?

Days four and five suit a day trip outside the city, and days six and seven can go to a second trip or to repeating the areas you liked.

  • 5 days: add one full day for the Great Ocean Road or Phillip Island, and keep a spare day for shopping or rest.
  • 7 days: add one or two more trips, such as the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong Ranges or the Mornington Peninsula.
  • Each trip leaves in a different direction, so do not combine two in one day.

Routes, tours and driving details sit in the companion guide on Great Ocean Road and Melbourne day trips, so this one stays inside the city.

Where should you stay in Melbourne?

First-time visitors should stay in the CBD or Southbank, because trams and stations are within walking distance and the area sits in or beside the Free Tram Zone.

How do the Free Tram Zone and contactless payment work?

Transport Victoria says trams inside the CBD and Docklands Free Tram Zone need no tap-on if the whole trip stays inside the zone; if a trip starts or ends outside, you must tap on.

In 2026 Victoria switched on tap-and-go: Visa and Mastercard cards, phones and watches work on myki-enabled trains, trams and buses, with buses completed in late July 2026. Use the same card or device all day so the daily cap is applied correctly.

Fares in Victoria were temporarily reduced in 2026, so check the current fares before you travel. This was last checked in October 2026, and the PTV app shows live journey plans.

What does a 7-day Melbourne plan look like?

A balanced seven-day plan is three days in the city, three days for trips outside it and one spare day for rest or for rain.

  1. 1Days 1 to 3Follow the city plan above, from the CBD to Southbank and then Fitzroy and St Kilda.
  2. 2Day 4Your first trip out, ideally the longest one you want, while you still have energy.
  3. 3Day 5Slow day in the city: markets, souvenirs and any area you missed.
  4. 4Days 6 to 7Pick one or two more trips in different directions, and leave time to pack before you fly home.
Tourism Australia lists winter as June to August and summer as December to February. Carry a rain layer in any season, because Melbourne weather changes quickly.

Do you need a myki card, or is a bank card enough?

Visitors can now tap a Visa or Mastercard instead of buying a myki card, according to Transport Victoria, and the fare matches myki.

  • Check that your bank card has contactless enabled and review its overseas fees.
  • Tap the same card every time; keep other cards away from the reader so two cards are not charged.
  • Concession holders must use a myki card, as the agency states.

How does phone data help when you explore Melbourne alone?

Maps, tram journey planning and messages from your accommodation all rely on mobile data, especially when you travel solo.

  • Open the PTV app or Google Maps to see live tram times before you leave your room.
  • Paying with your phone to tap on means keeping it charged and connected.
  • Check before travelling that your phone model supports emergency calls to 000 over Australia's 4G network.
