Money checklist for your first overseas trip
A timeline checklist from several weeks before, to the day before, at the destination and after you return. With a table of what to check, a backup plan for a blocked card or dead phone, and how to review your statement after the trip.

إجابة سريعة
- Money for a first trip splits into four stages. Several weeks before, check your cards, overseas-use settings and the ways you will pay. The day before, prepare backups and note contact channels. During the trip, keep alerts on and save receipts. After you return, compare your statement against your receipts.
- This is a checklist, not financial advice, and it contains no cost figures. Fees and rates change, so check with your own providers.
The overview: four stages
A first trip is exciting enough that small things get forgotten and turn into problems far from home. Splitting the tasks by stage means you do not have to remember everything at once, and leaves time for things that take days, such as replacing a card or ordering currency in advance.

Several weeks before
- Check whether your cards expire before or after the trip and whether the limit leaves room for hotel holds.
- Enable overseas use per your bank's process if it is not already on, and check through your bank's official channels whether it needs to be told.
- Decide what is your main method and what is backup; see our comparison of travel card, credit card and cash.
- If you want some cash in a particular currency, ask your bank whether it must be ordered ahead.
- Set up any wallet or payment app you plan to use and make one test payment.
- Look at travel insurance and its conditions from the policy documents, not from memory.
Checklist table by timeline
| المرحلة | ما يجب فعله | أين تتحقق |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks before | Enable overseas use, check card expiry, decide payment methods | Bank app or website |
| Day before | Prepare backups, note lost-card numbers, store cards separately | Issuer's documents |
| At the destination | Keep alerts on, keep receipts, check the total before signing or paying | Card app and physical receipts |
| After you return | Compare the statement with receipts and dispute items that are not yours | Statement and the issuer's dispute channel |
Money checklist by timeline

The day before you fly
- 1Separate cards and cashPut the main card and backup in different places and split cash into two parts.
- 2Save contact channelsNote the lost-card numbers and channels that work from abroad, both on your phone and on paper.
- 3Check your banking appOpen the app and confirm you can log in, set alerts and learn how to lock a card temporarily if that feature exists.
- 4Photograph key documentsPhotograph or scan your passport, hotel booking and insurance policy and keep them somewhere secure.
For banking apps that may behave differently abroad, see our guides on banking apps abroad and on receiving OTP codes overseas.
أثناء الرحلة
- Keep per-transaction alerts on so unusual charges show up immediately.
- Check the amount and currency on the terminal before confirming, and see our guide on the currency choice at the card terminal.
- Never share OTP codes or your PIN with anyone, whoever claims to be the bank.
- Keep receipts for larger items until you have checked the statement.
- If you use ATMs, choose ones in safe places such as inside a bank branch or a busy mall.

Backup plan: card blocked, phone dead, ATM down
| الحالة | ما يجب فعله |
|---|---|
| Main card blocked or declined | Switch to the backup, then contact the issuer through official channels |
| Phone dead or lost | Use reserve cash and the contact channels you wrote down; see our lost-phone guide |
| ATM out of order | Try another machine in a safe place, or pay by card for now |
| Shop takes cash only | Use your small cash for it, or look for an alternative shop |
For a lost or stolen phone abroad, follow the steps in our lost-or-stolen-phone guide, and for emergency contact see our guide on emergency calls abroad.
After you return
When the statement arrives, go through every foreign-currency line and compare it with receipts and alerts. If you see a charge that is not yours or one billed twice, contact the issuer promptly and follow the dispute process in their documents. For tax refunds, see the rules per country in our guide on VAT and tax refunds for tourists.
Do not forget data for payments and banking apps
Confirming transactions, using payment apps and freezing a card through an app all need internet. Without data from the moment you land, you may hit problems at the very first step. You can check the live eSIM price for your destination and how to install it on the plan pages.
الأسئلة الشائعة
Do I need to tell my bank before I travel?+
It depends on the bank and card type. Check the bank's official channels for any overseas-use activation or travel notice step.
How much cash should I carry on a first trip?+
We give no figure. Think of cash you will certainly need at first, an emergency reserve and the part left to cards, and adjust to what you learn about the destination.
How many cards should I take?+
At least two independent ways to pay, stored separately. You do not need to take every card.
What do I do first if a card is lost?+
Contact the issuer through official channels to freeze the card at once, switch to your backup and keep notes on what happened.
Why does the statement differ from the amount at the till?+
Because of currency conversion, possible issuer fees, and the fact that some items are still pending when you first see them. See our guide on card charges abroad.
When should I start preparing money matters?+
Several weeks ahead, because some things, such as replacing a card or ordering currency, take days.
Do I need to keep receipts?+
Keep at least the larger ones until you have checked the statement and settled any tax refund or dispute.
