Airport Counter SIM or eSIM Ready Before Landing: Taoyuan and Other Taiwan Airports
A comparison of counter SIMs in the arrivals hall, pocket Wi-Fi rental, and an eSIM prepared before you land.

إجابة سريعة
- A counter SIM gives you a Taiwanese number and staff help, but you queue after immigration and must register with your passport.
- An eSIM is ready before you land, has no card to lose, and lets the Thai SIM keep receiving OTPs, but data-only plans have no Taiwanese number.
- Choose the counter if you want a local number or dislike tech set-up; choose eSIM if you want to leave the airport quickly and your phone supports it.
What you meet on arrival
Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) has two terminals, T1 and T2. Both arrivals halls have counters from the main operators, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone, along with pocket Wi-Fi rental desks. Songshan (TSA) in Taipei and Kaohsiung (KHH) also have SIM counters, though smaller ones.
The usual order is immigration, baggage, customs, and only then the counters in the arrivals hall. A counter SIM therefore cannot help while you are still inside, for example when you want to message your hotel or open a ride app before immigration.

Buying a counter SIM: what to bring
- Your original passport: tourist prepaid SIMs require real-name registration with a passport.
- A second ID: stores in the city may ask for an extra document, so carry another ID such as a driving licence.
- A phone that is not network-locked, with a working SIM tray. Staff often swap the card for you, but keep the Thai SIM in a small pouch so it is not lost.
- Your hotel address or a backup email in case the registration form asks for contact details.
Before paying, ask staff three things: how many days the plan runs and how those days are counted, whether data slows down or stops after the quota, and whether hotspot sharing is allowed. Note the answers in your phone, and photograph the receipt and the SIM number in case something goes wrong later.
Queues and time lost
When several flights from Asia land together, for example in the evening and early morning, counters can queue up because staff enter passport details and set up each SIM one traveller at a time. Waits vary a lot from day to day: sometimes quick, sometimes longer than expected.
If a driver or friend is waiting, or you plan to take the Taoyuan Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station, time at the counter hurts more. If you are not in a hurry and want someone to help with settings, the queue may not matter.

Pocket Wi-Fi: pickup and return
Pocket Wi-Fi is a small device that shares one connection with several phones. Pickup is usually in the arrivals hall, though some companies require advance booking and a named counter. At the end of the trip you return it at the airport before departure check-in, or by post if the terms allow.
- Upside: several devices share it, and your phone does not need eSIM support.
- Downside: one more thing to charge, carry and return on time, and a lost unit can be charged under the rental terms.
- If your group splits up, the device stays with only one person.
Side-by-side comparison
| العامل | Counter SIM | Wi-Fi محمول | eSIM |
|---|---|---|---|
| وقت الإعداد | After immigration, queue and register | Collect and switch on | Done before the flight, switched on at landing |
| Taiwanese phone number | Often included, depending on the product | لا شيء | باقات None on data-only |
| Sharing | Via hotspot, subject to terms | Built for sharing | Via hotspot, subject to terms |
| Risk of losing a card | Thai SIM is removed and must be kept safe | Must return the unit; loss may be charged | No card to drop, Thai SIM stays inside |
| Keeping the Thai number for OTP | Needs swapping or a second phone | Yes, the Thai SIM is untouched | Yes, both lines run together |

Who should pick which
الإيجابيات
- eSIM suits people with a compatible phone who want to leave quickly and keep the Thai SIM for OTP.
- A counter SIM suits people who need a Taiwanese number for restaurant calls or local verification codes.
- Pocket Wi-Fi suits groups who always travel together with devices that lack eSIM.
السلبيات
- Counter SIMs and pocket Wi-Fi take time to collect and return, while eSIM needs a compatible phone and advance set-up.
- Each option has different limits, so none is best for everyone.
One more point is indoor signal. Most travellers get data as soon as they leave the arrivals hall, but weak spots such as underground MRT platforms can slow things down for a while, whether you use a SIM or an eSIM. Download an offline map of the route from the airport to your hotel in advance.
Songshan and Kaohsiung airports
At Songshan (TSA), close to central Taipei, and Kaohsiung (KHH), linked to the city by MRT, SIM counters are smaller than at Taoyuan. Fewer flights often mean shorter queues, but counter hours and products differ, so check the airport and operator websites.
If you land very late or very early, assume a counter may be closed; an eSIM prepared in advance is the safer fallback.
الأسئلة الشائعة
الأسئلة الشائعة
Do I need my real passport to buy a counter SIM?+
Yes, because of real-name registration. Carry the original and keep it in your own hands during the process.
What if the counters are closed when I land late?+
Check hours on the official sites in advance and keep an eSIM, airport Wi-Fi or iTaiwan (if registered) as a fallback.
Can an eSIM make local calls?+
Data-only plans have no number, but you can call over the internet through apps like LINE or WhatsApp.
