How do the UK, England and Great Britain differ, and which countries make up the UK?

إجابة سريعة

  • The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and England is only one of those four parts.
  • Great Britain means England, Scotland and Wales without Northern Ireland, and Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are not part of the UK.
  • The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area, so a UK visa does not allow entry to Schengen countries.

The UK is a single state made up of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and England is just one of them. Thai speakers often say England for the whole country, but when you apply for a visa, buy a SIM or plan a route, using the right term helps you avoid mistakes.

Does one UK visa cover the whole UK?

Yes. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) issues one Standard Visitor visa that covers England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with no separate Scottish or Welsh visa. Thai citizens apply for a visa before travel because Thailand is on the visa national list; the ETA is for nationalities that do not need a visa. Check the current fee and processing time on gov.uk.

What is the difference between Northern Ireland and Ireland?

Northern Ireland is part of the UK, while the Republic of Ireland is a separate country with its own visa rules. Thai nationals normally need an Irish visa, but Thailand is on Ireland's Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme: a Thai who holds a UK short-stay visit visa and first entered the UK on it may visit Ireland without an Irish visa for less than 90 days and only until their UK permission ends. The reverse does not apply, because an Irish visa does not allow entry to the UK.

An older Irish document gave an end date of 31 October 2026 for the visa waiver programme. This was last checked in October 2026, so confirm on the Irish Immigration Service Delivery site that the programme is still running before you book. The Common Travel Area has no routine passport checks on the land border on the island of Ireland, but you still need valid permission for each country.

How does the UK differ from the EU, and do you need a Schengen visa?

The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020, so it is outside the EU and the Schengen area. A UK visa does not allow entry to Schengen countries, a Schengen visa does not allow entry to the UK, and EU Roam like at home rules do not cover the UK. Thais taking Eurostar from London to Paris need a Schengen visa. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) began on 12 October 2025 and ran fully from 10 April 2026, with registration at St Pancras before departure. ETIAS had no confirmed start date as of 21 October 2026 and applies only to visa-exempt travellers, so it does not apply to Thais.

What money, plugs and phone networks does the UK use?

All four parts of the UK use pound sterling and Type G sockets, which have three rectangular pins at 230 V and 50 Hz. Most Thai devices need only a plug adapter, so check the label. The main networks are EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, and Vodafone and Three merged into VodafoneThree on 31 May 2025. Ofcom states all four have completed their 3G switch-offs. The country code is +44 and the emergency numbers are 999 and 112.

  • Pounds work in all four parts, but Scotland and Northern Ireland also have local bank notes that some shops in England may decline.
  • Sockets often have an on/off switch, so switch on before charging.
  • Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own devolved governments, but visitors need no extra visa and face no passport check when moving between the parts of the UK.
  • Phones need 4G or 5G with VoLTE because 3G has closed.

How does internet use fit in, and how do you pick an eSIM?

Because the UK is outside the EU, a Europe data plan or roaming pack does not automatically include it, so check the plan's country list for United Kingdom. A single-country plan suffices for a UK-only trip. Check AIS, True or dtac roaming packs with your operator, and keep your Thai SIM for OTPs with data roaming off, since a data-only eSIM has no UK number for sites that send SMS codes.

If you plan to continue into Europe, read “Europe eSIM: one regional plan or a stack of single-country plans?”.
