What Phuket is like on a phone

Phuket takes in two crowds at once: families settling into a resort for a week, and travellers using the island as a base before hopping onward. Because it is an island with a real town on it — hospitals, malls, a working port — coverage along the developed west-coast beaches arrives reliably nearly everywhere. What surprises people is the gap between being on land here and being out on the water, which behaves like a different place entirely.

When you land

Almost everyone lands at Phuket International (HKT) at the northern end of the island, a fair drive from the popular beaches. Turn the line on before you leave your seat, because the moment you step out of the doors you will be comparing car options and finding the pick-up bay. The other way in is by sea to Rassada pier, which the Phi Phi and Koh Yao boats share. Driving south toward Patong or Kata the road climbs over several ridges; the map keeps working, but set your destination before you pull away rather than halfway up a hill.

Where coverage changes

The west-coast strip from Mai Khao down to Karon is built up continuously, so signal follows you along it. The clear weak points are the hill roads between bays, where the ridge itself blocks a whole direction, and the small coves tucked behind headlands where one end of the sand works and the other does not. Once a boat pulls away from shore the line fades rather than cuts, thinning out over open water and returning as you approach an inhabited island. Inside sea caves and closed lagoons ringed by cliffs, do not plan on sending anything at all.

What a day here costs in data

A beach-based day here is lighter than a city day, roughly 700MB to 1.5GB, because the map is not open from morning to night. The number jumps on boat-trip days, when people film all day and then upload the lot in one go the moment they are back ashore. Booking a table and checking the sea conditions before you sail costs little, but has to happen while you still have a good line. If you rent a car and navigate across the island several times a day, add roughly half again.

Districts travellers ask about

• Patong — The island's busiest beach, with full bars everywhere, though on an evening when the Bangla strip fills up, uploading a photo or calling a car slows across the whole area at once.
• Kata–Karon — Long curved bays lined with accommodation, usable the length of the sand, though at the viewpoint on the rise between them you sometimes have to roll forward a little before the map resumes.
• Phuket Old Town — Two-storey Sino-Portuguese shophouses line Thalang Road and the lanes off it; the street itself is fine, but in the long, deep buildings the back of a shop is noticeably weaker than the front.
• Bang Tao–Laguna — A broad, open resort zone in the north where driving keeps a steady line, though on parts of the path beside the inner lagoons the tree cover is thick enough to pull the speed down for a stretch.

Day trips out of the city

• The Phi Phi islands — The big boats leave Rassada and take nearly two hours; mid-crossing on open water the line genuinely goes, not merely slows, so save your tickets and music first. It returns once you reach the village on Phi Phi Don.
• Phang Nga Bay — A long-tail and sea-kayak day; as the boat threads between the big limestone stacks the signal cuts in and out depending on which way you are pointed, and inside the tunnel caves and closed lagoons there is none.
• Khao Sok — Three hours north into rainforest and reservoir country. The road is workable, but once a boat takes you out to the raft houses on the lake, treat yourself as offline and tell people at home in advance.
