The first minutes after landing are the most connectivity-critical of the whole trip.

Quick answer
The hour after the wheels touch down is the hour of the whole trip that leans hardest on the internet. You have just arrived somewhere unfamiliar, the signs may be in a script you cannot read, whoever is meeting you might be waiting at a different terminal, and you have several decisions to make back to back: which exit, which kind of car, and how to tell anyone you have landed.
It is also the hour people prepare for least, because the plan is usually to find the airport Wi-Fi when they get there, or to look for a SIM counter in arrivals. Both can work, and both can fail on the day you are most tired and have the least time. This page is about walking off the aircraft already connected — no queue, no hunt for a power socket, no luck required.

Walk through it honestly and the list of things people do in the first minutes after aeroplane mode goes off is short: message home to say you landed, open a ride app or check where a pre-booked car is, read the messages a driver sent while you were in the air, and pull up a map to work out which end of the terminal the right exit is at.
Every item on that list needs the internet, and nearly all of it has to happen inside the building, before you reach anyone who can help. That is why an eSIM installed in advance is worth so much on this kind of arrival. It is not only cheaper; it saves time at the point where time is most expensive.
| Stage after landing | What you are doing | Does it need data |
|---|---|---|
| Touchdown to doors open | Turning off aeroplane mode, waiting for the phone to find a network | Yes — and this is where the eSIM should already be working |
| Walking to immigration | Reading messages that queued up, replying to whoever is meeting you | Yes — app messages will not arrive without it |
| Queuing at passport control | Filling in whatever online form the country requires | Yes, and some halls ban phones in the queue — do it before you join |
| At the baggage belt | Booking a car ahead, checking fares, finding the pickup point | Yes — this is the best window to sort the car out |
| Stepping out of arrivals | Finding the driver, confirming the plate, calling through the app | Yes, and signal in a car park can be weaker than inside |
Stage by stage after landing, and where data is not optional
Plenty of airports offer free Wi-Fi, but the terms differ wildly. Some give you a limited free window, some require registration with a phone number and an SMS code — which is precisely the problem when you have no number that receives messages in that country yet — and at some the coverage is only good in parts of the building.
The deeper problem is that airport Wi-Fi stops at the exit door. Once you are in the car, at the bus stand, or standing in the pickup lane, you have nothing — and that is exactly when you need to confirm where you are standing with a driver. An eSIM that is already running makes that whole stretch continuous, with no gap in the middle.
The sequence that always works is to install the profile at home and leave it alone until travel day. Installing and starting the validity clock are separate events in many cases, but not all — it depends on the supplier you bought from. Read the terms before you install, and if you are unsure, ask before the day of the flight rather than at the gate.

Both have their place. A ride app shows the fare before you get in, shows the route as you go, and leaves a record you can look back at — but it needs data from the moment you request the car until you are in it. A taxi desk inside the terminal needs no data at all, but you have to take the quoted price on trust and make the destination understood.
At many airports, ride apps have a designated pickup zone that can be on a different level or in a different building from where you walked out, and the arrangement differs airport by airport. Some also restrict which private-hire vehicles may collect from arrivals at all. Check the airport's own information before you travel rather than assuming it works the way it did somewhere else.
Pros
Cons
The classic airport pickup failure is both sides naming a meeting point in words that mean something different to each of them. The same exit number can exist on both the arrivals and departures level, one terminal can have several halls, and "wait by the exit" specifies nothing in a building with six of them.
What works is sending an actual pin through a map rather than describing the spot, plus agreeing in advance where to go if you cannot reach each other within fifteen minutes. A good fallback is somewhere findable from any direction: an information desk, or a shop with only one branch in that building. With that agreement in place, a data problem stops being a lost-person problem.
A lot of what you do in that first hour involves proving who you are: signing in to a ride app on a phone that does not use it often, paying by card, opening a banking app. Many of those systems send the code by SMS to your existing number, not to a data-only eSIM.
The tidy arrangement is to keep the home SIM in the phone able to receive calls and texts, with its data roaming turned off, and let the eSIM carry data alone. Receiving SMS abroad may carry a charge under your home operator's terms — only they can tell you what it is, so check before you fly.

Working through it in order beats guessing, because changing several things at once leaves you unable to tell which one was the problem, and usually ends in a messier configuration than you started with. The list below runs from the most common cause to the least.
A travel day usually uses more data than a normal day of the trip. Maps stay open for long stretches, messages fly back and forth, and every app on the phone tries to sync whatever queued up while you were in the air. With automatic photo backup on it is heavier still, because the day's photos all start uploading at once.
The simplest fix is to switch off automatic syncing for the heavy apps before you fly and turn it back on at the hotel Wi-Fi. What size plan suits you depends on what you use and for how many days, which is easier to work out from your own habits than from a number someone quoted you.
If the airport is only a connection and you stay airside, you may not need data in that country at all — unless you have to reach the airline about the onward flight, or the layover is long enough to go out. If it is your real destination and you will walk out to a hotel, you need to be online before you reach immigration.
One thing to watch: a regional plan does not necessarily cover every country you will set foot in on the same trip. If your route connects through a third country, read the whole country list rather than checking only the final destination — the moment you most want data may well be a delayed connection.
All of it fits into the taxi to the stand, takes under a minute, and removes most of what goes wrong in an arrivals hall.
If something is not going to plan, deal with it while you are still inside, where there are seats, sockets and a Wi-Fi network to borrow. Walking out first and troubleshooting afterwards is a much harder order to do it in. You can reach us on LINE at https://lin.ee/skDPoNx (@esimonline) or by email at esimonline.asia@gmail.com.
We take support around the clock, every day, on LINE, by email, or by phone at 089-942-0818 and 088-521-6848 — but installing and testing before departure still matters more than it sounds. If you land in the middle of the night Thailand time, assume a reply may come a little slower and keep a fallback ready — terminal Wi-Fi, or the taxi desk inside arrivals.
Install the profile at home, because that step needs the internet. When the validity clock starts depends on the terms of the plan you bought: some begin at first network connection, some on a date you choose. Read that plan's conditions before you travel.
It depends on whether the validity has started. If you have not activated it, the clock generally has not begun; once it has, the days run whether you use them or not. If you know the schedule might move, check the supplier's activation policy before you switch it on — and ask us if it is not clear.
Most ride apps work on your existing account over data. Some apps, or some countries, may still ask for an SMS verification, and that goes to your existing number rather than to a data-only eSIM. The safe approach is to keep the home SIM able to receive texts and to sign in to the apps you will need before you leave.
Agree the channel in advance — a messaging app you both use — along with a clear meeting point and a fallback for the case where you cannot reach each other. If the car comes from a hotel or a company, get the driver's name and plate before you fly and store them offline on the phone.
The most common cause is that mobile data is still pointed at the home SIM whose roaming you turned off. Next most common is that the eSIM profile is not enabled, or that data roaming on that profile is not switched on. Work through the ordered list above and resist changing several things at once, or you will never find the cause.
If you are leaving the airport for a night you do need data in that country, but the volume is small — mostly maps and messaging. The smallest plan covering that country is usually enough. What to check is that the plan covers the country where you actually leave the terminal, not just the final destination on the ticket.
