What Cancún is like on a phone

Cancún is really two places with very different feels: the hotel strip running along a sandbar between the sea and the lagoon, and the working city inland where people actually live. Most visitors stay on an all-inclusive basis and go out for whole days at a time — to an island, to a cenote, to a ruined city — and each of those behaves differently on the network. Along the strip the line is continuously usable, but the moment you board a boat or drive inland into the scrub, the story changes markedly.

When you land

Cancún airport (CUN) has several terminals with international flights spread among them, so check the terminal number on your ticket before arranging a pickup. Turn the eSIM on while waiting for passport control, where the queue can be long when several aircraft land together. In the arrivals hall a great many people offer cars and tours; if you have booked, walk straight to the meeting point your provider gave you and confirm by message. The road from the airport to the strip is connected throughout and is quick outside peak hours.

Where coverage changes

The whole strip and the main road along it are continuously usable, as is the inland city. Take a boat across to an island and the line weakens mid-channel before returning as the far pier approaches; on the island itself the village and the harbour are good while the far end thins. The road south along the coast and the side roads that turn off into the scrub towards the cenotes include genuinely unserved stretches, and many cenotes are underground with no signal at all. Always download maps beforehand.

What a day here costs in data

A day spent on the strip leaning on the hotel's Wi-Fi often uses very little mobile data — possibly under half a gigabyte. A full-day excursion is different: the map stays open, underwater photos get uploaded straight away and there are messages back and forth with a driver or guide, which pushes it to roughly 1–2GB. If you want to send snorkelling video home, wait until you are back at the room and on Wi-Fi, because video files cost many times what photos do.

Districts travellers ask about

• The Zona Hotelera strip — One long road between sea and lagoon with a continuous line and easy car pickups, though inside the heavier hotel lobbies it softens in places.
• El Centro, the downtown — Where people actually live, with markets and local-priced restaurants; the line is good and getting a car back is easier than many expect.
• Puerto Juárez and the ferry piers — Good coverage at the piers — buy tickets and check times while still ashore, since the line weakens mid-channel and timetables shift with the season.
• Puerto Morelos to the south — A far quieter seaside village where the line works in the village itself, though the side roads inland to the cenotes drop out plainly.

Day trips out of the city

• Isla Mujeres by ferry — The line softens mid-channel and returns near the island; the village is fine but the far end thins if you take a golf cart out there. Note the last ferry time while still ashore, because the schedule changes with the season.
• Chichén Itzá and a cenote on the way — The inland highway has genuinely unserved stretches and an underground cenote has no signal at all; download the whole route and agree a meeting point with your driver in advance. Entry fees and opening hours change from year to year — check with the authority that manages the site.
• South to Playa del Carmen — The coast road is connected nearly throughout and the town is fine, but resorts set well back from the highway can be much weaker — check your route home while you still have a line.
