Best eSIM for Japan in 2026: which brand, which network
A comparison of Japan eSIM options by plan model, partner network and policy, so you can match one to your trip.

Hızlı yanıt
- No single brand wins for everyone: pick a plan that names its network and whose model matches how you will use data.
- Japan has four operators, NTT docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile, and each plan uses a different set of them.
- Compare the live price for your exact dates, since prices change weekly, and keep your Thai SIM on for bank OTP.
What this comparison is based on
This review reads the plans, policies and help pages each brand publishes, as of October 2026. It is based on those pages, not on a test trip. GB sizing is covered in the related guides linked below, so this one stays on which brand or option to pick and why. This site sells eSIMs too, so it appears in the table as one option and is not ranked first.

The four networks in Japan
Japan's mobile operators are NTT docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. A travel eSIM runs on one or several of them, depending on the plan, so the plan page says more than the brand name does.
- The AIS SIM2Fly Japan pack lists SoftBank, KDDI, NTT DOCOMO and Rakuten.
- esimonline Japan plans use KDDI/au, NTT docomo or SoftBank, varying by plan, and each plan page shows the network.
- For Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Ubigi, read the network details on each brand's own plan page.
Why the partner network matters
The sources behind this guide include no coverage maps, so it does not claim that one network is stronger. Still, rural trips, mountain towns, Hokkaido, ski resorts and long subway rides are where a plan tied to a single network can behave differently from one that can pick between several.
- Does the plan page name its network? If it only says Japan, ask support before buying.
- Hotspot terms: the Holafly Japan page shows 1 GB a day of hotspot, while Ubigi says tethering on its unlimited plans has no restrictions.
- Unlimited plans slow down: Airalo drops to 1 Mbps after 3GB in a day, and Ubigi drops to 2 Mbps after a threshold that varies by plan.

Local SIM or eSIM on arrival
An eSIM can be installed before you leave, so data works the moment you land. A local SIM has to be bought after arrival. If you plan to buy one there, check whether it is data only or comes with a number, what registration it needs, and whether your phone must be free of carrier locks. A phone without eSIM support can use a physical SIM from a Thai carrier, such as SIM2Fly, which is sold in both forms.

Entry rules and data at arrival
Japan's online arrival procedure, Visit Japan Web, uses a QR code that you may need to open on arrival. Have data ready straight away, or save the QR code on your phone before you fly. Check the details on the official site.
Matching an option to your trip
- Pay and register through a Thai carrier: SIM2Fly or GO Travel MyPlan. Both use a number separate from your own, count days from the first connection abroad, and must be used within 60 days of opening or scanning.
- Heavy hotspot use: compare Ubigi, Airalo (no device limit on its unlimited plans) and Holafly (a daily hotspot cap).
- Might need more data mid-trip: Airalo offers top-ups on many eSIMs, Holafly no longer does, and Nomad add-ons start only when the original plan expires.
- Worried about a wrong purchase: compare refund terms. Nomad refunds in full within 30 days if not installed, Holafly within 6 months if not activated, and esimonline offers a self-service refund within 14 days if not installed.

SSS
Which Japan network is best?+
The sources used here include no speed tests or coverage maps, so this guide does not rank networks. Pick a plan that names its network, and ask support if you are heading somewhere remote.
How early can I buy?+
Airalo says to install as early as possible, since networks may recycle unused eSIMs, often 90 days after purchase. Nomad must be activated within 60 days, and SIM2Fly used abroad within 60 days of opening. Buying close to departure is the safer habit.
Yalnızca veri içeren bir eSIM arama yapabilir mi?+
It has no number, so ordinary SMS will not arrive. Calling apps over data work. For network calls, look at voice plans, such as the AIS ones, which need HD Voice (VoLTE) on docomo and KDDI.
