Johor Bahru Day Trip from Singapore: Buses, Train, Checkpoints and Mobile Data
How to cross from Singapore to Johor Bahru by bus or KTM train, what Thai travellers need at the border, and how to keep mobile data working in Malaysia.

Hızlı yanıt
- You can cross to Johor Bahru by bus through Woodlands Checkpoint and the Causeway, or by the KTM Shuttle Tebrau train from Woodlands to JB Sentral.
- Thai passport holders enter Malaysia visa-free but must submit the free MDAC online within 3 days before arrival.
- A Singapore-only data plan may not work in Malaysia, so check that the plan lists Malaysia before you leave.
Your crossing options
Johor Bahru, usually shortened to JB, sits just north of Singapore across the Johor Strait. Two land routes are in regular use, the bus and the train, and both involve two immigration checks: one leaving Singapore and one entering Malaysia.
| Seçenek | Yol | İçin iyi |
|---|---|---|
| Otobüs | Board at Queen Street or Kranji/Woodlands, pass Woodlands Checkpoint, cross the Causeway to Johor Bahru CIQ (Bangunan Sultan Iskandar) | Flexible timing, many services |
| KTM Shuttle Tebrau train | Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB Sentral, booked on the KTMB website or app | Quick and avoids road traffic; seats are limited |
| RTS Link | Woodlands North to Bukit Chagar, built but not yet open | Not available for planning yet |

Entry requirements for Thai travellers
Thai passport holders can enter Malaysia without a visa for up to 30 days. You must also submit the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) on the official Immigration Department of Malaysia site, no earlier than 3 days before you enter.
Carry a passport with at least 6 months of validity and keep a screenshot of the MDAC confirmation on your phone in case the signal is weak at the checkpoint. The basics of passport validity are covered in the guide on passport validity and visa basics.

Queue timing
Queues at Woodlands Checkpoint and on the Causeway get very long on weekends, public holidays and Friday evenings. If you can, go on a weekday and leave early in the morning. For the return, leave JB before the late afternoon to avoid the rush of people heading home together.
- Pick a weekday and leave early
- Avoid Friday evenings and the day before a holiday
- The train avoids road traffic, but immigration checks still apply
- Check live traffic on a maps app before leaving your hotel

The day-trip routine, step by step
- 11. Submit your formsSubmit the MDAC and prepare the SG Arrival Card for your return. Install your eSIM beforehand.
- 22. Get to the departure pointHead to Queen Street, Kranji or Woodlands for the bus, or Woodlands Train Checkpoint for the train.
- 33. Clear both checkpointsExit Singapore first, then clear Malaysian immigration on the JB side. Time depends on the crowd that day.
- 44. Explore, then head back earlySet a return time in advance and allow extra time for the queue back.

What to do in Johor Bahru
Around JB Sentral and City Square you will find malls and plenty of places to eat. The old town has the Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple and the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque. Dress modestly and remove your shoes when entering religious sites.
Legoland Malaysia is in Iskandar Puteri, further out, so treat it as a full-day trip and check the current hours on the official site. The currency is the ringgit; check the latest rate in your bank app.
Mobile data when you cross
After the border, your phone switches to a Malaysian network on its own. But a Singapore-only plan may not cover Malaysia, so your data can stop as soon as you cross the Causeway. Before buying, read the country list and make sure both Singapore and Malaysia appear.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and set it as your mobile data line
- Keep the Thai SIM on for bank OTP messages
- Download an offline map of JB in case the signal drops near the checkpoint
For Malaysia-only detail, see “Malaysia Internet for Travellers: SIM, eSIM and Mobile Data in KL and Penang”.
Bus or train: which to choose
Buses run on many services and leave often, which suits travellers who do not want to book ahead. You get off to clear immigration with your belongings, and the bus can crawl on the Causeway when crowds build. The KTM Shuttle Tebrau is more predictable and ends at JB Sentral, which connects to a mall and local transport, but seats are limited so it is better to book early.
Always check timetables, booking conditions and how to buy tickets on the official website or app, because services and payment methods can change.
Getting back to Singapore
Coming back you clear Malaysian and then Singapore immigration with the same passport. Submit your SG Arrival Card within 3 days before re-entering. Once you are back, turn off data roaming on the eSIM line if you no longer need it.
If you return in the evening, allow for queues on the bridge and at the checkpoints, and keep enough battery for a ride-hailing app or a map. A power bank is worth carrying.
