What the calculator multiplies, and what it cannot know

This page does simple arithmetic on figures you type: the daily roaming price your operator charges, the number of days in the trip, and the total price of the eSIM plan you are considering. It reports the gap over the whole trip. It does not fetch prices from any operator, inspect the fine print of your roaming package, or measure signal quality on either side.

We deliberately do not pre-fill anyone's roaming rates. Those prices belong to each operator, change without notice, and depend on the monthly package you already hold — two customers of the same operator can face different roaming prices on the same day. A number we remembered on your behalf would be wrong more often than useful.

The result is therefore exactly as good as what you feed it. Type a half-remembered advertised rate and the screen looks every bit as authoritative as it does when you type the real figure from your operator's app. That is a trap worth knowing about in advance.

Where your real roaming price is hiding

The price to enter is the one you will genuinely be charged for the country you are going to, at the time you are going. That is usually not the number on the operator's headline banner. It normally lives on the roaming page inside their app, where you pick the destination first and the price appears afterwards.

Watch the difference between a daily price and a billing-cycle price, and between a package you buy in advance and the automatic rate applied when you simply switch roaming on without buying anything. Those three produce wildly different numbers and are a leading reason a real bill fails to match a calculation.

Counting days the way the operator counts them

Days look like the number hardest to get wrong, and they are a frequent source of distortion. Seven nights away does not mean seven roaming days. The morning you fly out and the night you land back can each be charged as a full day, so what you call a seven-day trip becomes eight or nine on the billing system's view.

Time zones are the other trap. Billing systems often cut the day on home-country time rather than the local time where you are standing. Cross several hours of time zones and the bill's days stop lining up with yours, so checking messages late at night can quietly start a new charged day.

On the eSIM side, days work differently again. Most plans begin counting when the profile first attaches to a network in the destination — not when you paid, and not when you installed. That rule varies by supplier though, so read the specific plan page instead of assuming it behaves like the last one you used.

Reading the result honestly

The figure is the gap between two options under assumptions you supplied. It is neither a measurement nor a promise. Change the days or change which plan you would buy and it moves. The useful move is to run two or three versions — the trip stretching by two days, or needing the next size up of plan — and see whether the answer still points the same way.

If the answer flips when you nudge a variable slightly, the two options are too close to separate on price and the decision belongs to the non-financial factors covered in the next section. If it holds steady no matter how you nudge it, you have a conclusion solid enough to buy on.

What price leaves out, and often matters more

When the gap between the two options is narrow, the decision belongs to the practical differences, none of which appear in the arithmetic. Your number and the codes that depend on it

Roaming keeps your own number, so calls and SMS behave normally. Many travel eSIMs are data-only and carry no number for messages. That is not an argument that either is better; it means that if you need codes from your bank while travelling, you have to plan for it one way or another.

The effort at the start

Roaming usually switches on with a few taps in your operator's app. An eSIM needs a profile installed, which is a job for stable Wi-Fi before departure. Done in advance it is quick; done while standing at a baggage carousel it is miserable.

Control over what you spend

A prepaid eSIM plan has a ceiling you know before departure. Some roaming shapes are pay-as-you-use, meaning the final number arrives with the bill. For anyone budgeting in advance, that certainty has value even when the totals are close.

Running both at the same time

The option people overlook is not choosing at all: keep the home SIM for calls and SMS with its roaming data switched off, and let the eSIM carry all the data. You get your number and a predictable data cost, in exchange for getting a couple of settings right before you go.

Hidden costs worth adding to both columns

Roaming wins on simplicity and familiarity; the eSIM wins on a spending ceiling you know in advance. Very short trips where you barely go online tend to favour roaming, and longer ones leaning on maps and search every day tend to favour an eSIM — but all of that still needs confirming against your own figures rather than a rule of thumb.

Cases where the answer is usually obvious

A few situations produce a gap wide enough to remove the doubt. The first is a transit stop of a couple of hours where you only need to check messages — buying an entire plan for two hours rarely makes sense. The second is a multi-week trip needing data every day, where a daily roaming charge compounds well past the price of a plan.

The third is a monthly plan that already includes enough roaming data for your destination. The marginal cost is zero and the answer speaks for itself. The only thing to verify is whether the included allowance really matches your habits, because the excess usually reverts to standard rates — the point at which bills escape.
