What the converter does, and what it does not

This page divides the amount of data you type by an assumed hourly rate for the activity you pick, and returns a number of hours. Those hourly rates are fixed midpoints written into the formula. They are not pulled from your apps, not measured on your network, and not read from the video quality settings on your phone.

The output is a unit conversion meant to make an allowance imaginable, not a forecast of how long you will really watch. Stream from a room with a strong signal and the app raises quality on its own, and you get fewer hours than shown. Lock quality low while travelling and you get more. Neither case means the conversion is wrong.

The reason an inexact conversion still helps is speed of decision. Few people can say whether six gigabytes is enough; most can say immediately whether a certain number of episodes is enough. Changing the unit to match how people actually think turns a blind guess into a reasoned choice.

Why hours land better than gigabytes

Nobody has direct experience of a gigabyte. You cannot hold one, see one, or feel one, so the only comparison available is the number printed on some other plan. Hours are the unit people already run their lives in. Converted to hours, an unanswerable question becomes one you can settle by looking at your own itinerary.

The caveat is that these are not hours of uninterrupted, exclusive use. While you watch, the phone is still receiving messages, syncing mail and updating location for whatever is open. The hours shown belong to that one activity, not to your total phone use.

  1. 1Pick the activity closest to what you really doIf you watch mostly on a phone screen, pick a lower resolution than you would at home. On a small screen the difference is hard to see, while the data difference is not.
  2. 2Enter the data set aside for that activity, not the whole planEnter the whole plan and the hours look better than reality, because maps, chat and ordinary searching still need their share.
  3. 3Read the answer as a range, not a pointTreat the figure as having real slack either side and make decisions from the low end. If the low end still works, your plan has room to be wrong.
  4. 4Check it against reality once you arriveReset your phone's statistics, watch for ten minutes with your real settings, then read the figure. From that point you have your own rate, which beats any midpoint.

What moves the real number away from the estimate

The single heaviest variable is video resolution, and the gap between low and high is a multiple rather than a margin. Most apps default to choosing resolution automatically from connection quality, which means you can end up on the high setting without choosing it, purely because the connection at your accommodation is strong.

Next comes the material itself. Fast-moving, detailed footage costs more than a static scene at the same resolution, because compression has more new information to send in each frame. That is why two programmes watched at identical settings for identical lengths still differ.

The overlooked variable is app behaviour. Some apps pre-load the next clip while you are still on the current one, and if you scroll past without watching, that data is already spent. Others autoplay video as you scroll a feed, so the allowance drains on things you never chose to watch.

Locking video quality low while travelling saves more than closing every other app combined. That setting lives inside each video app, not in the phone's own settings, and every app names its menu differently — look for video quality or data usage within the app.

Each activity has its own quirks

Video

Video is the heaviest thing most travellers do and also the easiest to control, because the quality setting is right there. For a long watch on a train, downloading over the accommodation's Wi-Fi beats streaming: it costs less and it keeps playing through the dead spots along the route.

Görüntülü görüşmeler

A video call differs from watching video in that data flows both ways, and the app raises and lowers quality throughout the call as conditions change. The same call length costs a different amount each time. When you need to economise, turning the camera off is by far the biggest single saving, because the picture is nearly all of it.

Harita ve navigasyon

Navigation costs far less than people assume. What actually consumes data is panning around the map to explore, which fetches new tiles with every drag, rather than following a route already set. Downloading offline maps on Wi-Fi therefore buys confidence when the signal drops more than it buys savings.

Music and podcasts

Audio costs much less than video per hour, but people leave it running far longer, so the daily total is not as small as it feels when it plays all day every day. The simple fix is to download favourites on Wi-Fi and turn off the highest audio quality setting while travelling — again, inside the music app rather than in the phone's settings.

What drives each activity up, and the change that works

Veriniz gerçekte kaç saat yeter

What the hours do not include

The converter counts one activity, but a phone never does one thing. Through the day it syncs mail, receives messages, updates apps, backs up photos and checks location for anything that asks. None of that is in this formula. Plan on the full number of hours and you leave no room for the background.

Of all the background work, automatic photo and video backup surprises people most, because the amount depends on how much you shot that day and high-resolution video is far larger than stills. Film all day, leave backup running over mobile data, and the allowance drops without you opening a single app.

Before you travel, set any app that backs up photos to do it on Wi-Fi only. The setting lives inside that app, and its menu name varies by app and version — look for whatever section mentions mobile data or backup.

Measuring your own rate, which beats any midpoint

Midpoints exist for when you have no data of your own. Once you arrive, you can measure your real rate in ten minutes: reset the statistics for the eSIM line, close what you can, then do the activity with your actual settings for a timed stretch and scale the increase back up to an hour.

The rate you get applies to that place, that network and those settings. Move to another city or change the quality setting and it shifts. Even so it sits far closer to your situation than a global midpoint, and it is accurate enough to decide between economising and topping up.

  • Reset the eSIM line's statistics, not a combined total
  • Use the same quality settings you will really travel with
  • Time it properly rather than estimating ten minutes
  • Measure where the signal resembles real use, not only the hotel lobby
  • Measure again after moving city or country
  • Write the number down; next trip you start with a real baseline

What the converter cannot know

It does not know whether your plan carries a daily full-speed ceiling. If it does and you hit it first, the remaining hours in the calculation stop meaning anything, because what limits you is no longer the allowance but the plan's own condition — written on the detail page of the plan you bought, not in this formula.

It does not know the network quality you will meet in a given area, how well your particular app compresses video, whether your handset supports eSIM, or which networks a plan reaches at your destination. Handset support is a job for the device checker; coverage belongs to the plan's own page, since it depends on supplier, country and device together.

Do not treat the hours as a promise. They come from midpoints written into a formula, not from measuring your own session. Plan from the low end of the range and keep a reserve.

Turning hours into a plan choice

The practical method is to start from what you refuse to give up. If a nightly call home is non-negotiable, reserve that first and see what is left for entertainment and general use. Ordering it that way sizes the plan around what matters to you rather than around whichever number looks like the best value.

If the result lands near the boundary between two plan sizes, take the larger one. Not because we want you to spend more, but because buying a top-up mid-trip needs a working connection, and the moment you most want one is the moment the connection is least reliable.

Asking us

If the plan's detail page leaves you unsure whether there is a daily ceiling, or which plan suits how you use a phone, message us on LINE at https://lin.ee/skDPoNx (@esimonline) or email esimonline.asia@gmail.com. Tell us the destination, the number of days and the main activity, and we can point you at the right plans to compare.

LINE, email and phone at 089-942-0818 and 088-521-6848 are our channels — support runs around the clock, every day. The fastest questions to answer are the ones that arrive with an order number and a handset model, because nothing has to be asked back before we start.

SSS

Why did two clips of the same length use different amounts?+

Apps adjust resolution during playback according to the connection, and busy, fast-moving footage carries more information than a static scene at the same resolution. Between them, two clips of equal length can differ noticeably without you touching a setting.

Do the hours include background usage?+

No. It counts only the activity you selected. Mail syncing, app updates, incoming messages and automatic photo backup are all separate. In practice, set aside a slice of the allowance for background work before converting the rest into hours.

Do offline maps save much data?+

A little, but the main benefit is confidence rather than savings, since following a set route is already light. What offline maps really give you is a way to keep navigating when the signal disappears in a tunnel, indoors, or in a weak-coverage area.

How do I get a more accurate number?+

Measure it. Reset the eSIM line's statistics, run the activity with your real settings for ten minutes, then scale the increase up to an hour. The result reflects your app, your settings and your network, so it beats any midpoint written into a formula.

How much should I hold back for the unplanned?+

There is no single right figure, but the principle holds: do not plan to finish the allowance exactly on the last day. Something unplanned always turns up — a cancelled train that needs a new route, a document to send. A reserve means you are not making those decisions on an almost-empty allowance.
