What Chiang Mai is like on a phone

Chiang Mai attracts a different crowd from the coast. People stay longer here — plenty come for a month of remote work and pick accommodation on connection quality before anything else. The old city sits in a valley ringed by hills, which keeps urban coverage steady, but the western edge, where the ground starts rising, changes faster than newcomers expect. The question people actually ask here is about stability during a video call, not about whether there is a signal at all.

When you land

Chiang Mai airport (CNX) sits unusually close to town — a few minutes' drive to the moat. Switch the line on before you leave the terminal so you can order a car and check the route to your room. The other common ways in are the northern train, which stops at the station east of the Ping river, and long-distance coaches into Arcade bus terminal; both have normal service. If you come on the overnight train, the climbing section before Lampang drops in and out, so settle your accommodation details before you fall asleep.

Where coverage changes

Inside the square moat and around Nimmanhaemin the line is full and steady enough for a long video call. Things change where the road starts climbing Doi Suthep: the first bends are fine, but on the stretches where the mountain itself sits between you and the city, speed falls away and occasionally disappears. Hill villages with permanent residents usually come back into service because the community has its own mast. On the park's walking trails and at waterfalls tucked deep into a ravine, assume nothing until you are back up on a ridge.

What a day here costs in data

As a visitor you will run through about 600MB to 1.2GB a day, because the town is small enough to walk and the map does not need to stay open. If you are here to work remotely the arithmetic is different in kind: an hour of video calling costs far more than people assume, and tethering a laptop all day puts you in whole gigabytes rather than hundreds of megabytes. Scanning to pay at the market and booking a cooking class barely register next to that.

• Inside the moat — A grid of narrow lanes with a temple every block or two; low buildings mean coverage reaches everywhere, though inside some old wooden halls the walls are thick enough that you step back out under the eaves to send a photo.
• Nimmanhaemin — Cafes and condos where the remote-work crowd concentrates; speeds hold up all day, but in the afternoon, when every table has a laptop on it, the cafe's own Wi-Fi gives out long before mobile data does.
• The Ping riverside — The quieter east bank is full of big old trees; the line stays usable, but under the thickest canopy along the water's edge it is noticeably slower than out on the road.
• San Kamphaeng — Flat eastern outskirts with craft villages strung along the road; with no mountain in the way the line is consistent, a clear contrast to the hill side of town.

Day trips out of the city

• Doi Suthep and Doi Pui — Forty minutes up from town; the temple terrace at the top is busy and workable, but the bends that sit behind the ridge on the way go quiet for stretches, so set the route before you start driving.
• Pai — Hundreds of bends north, with service alternating between present and absent depending on altitude and which way the valley faces. Once you drop into Pai itself, a small basin full of shops and guesthouses, things behave normally again.
• Doi Inthanon national park — The country's highest summit; the top terrace and the main viewpoints are usable, but the nature trails that drop into cloud forest and the deeper waterfalls have nothing, so pin where you parked before you walk in.
