If you come on the overnight train, the climbing section before Lampang drops in and out, so settle your accommodation details before you fall asleep.

Things change where the road starts climbing Doi Suthep: the first bends are fine, but on the stretches where the mountain itself sits between you and the city, speed falls away and occasionally disappears. On the park's walking trails and at waterfalls tucked deep into a ravine, assume nothing until you are back up on a ridge.

• Pai — Hundreds of bends north, with service alternating between present and absent depending on altitude and which way the valley faces. Once you drop into Pai itself, a small basin full of shops and guesthouses, things behave normally again.
• Doi Inthanon national park — The country's highest summit; the top terrace and the main viewpoints are usable, but the nature trails that drop into cloud forest and the deeper waterfalls have nothing, so pin where you parked before you walk in.
