A holiday and a work trip lean on data in different ways. On holiday, half an hour of slow service is an annoyance. On a work trip, that same half hour may be the one where a client is already sitting in the meeting room waiting for you. The demanding tasks are rarely web browsing: they are video calls that push your camera feed out continuously, screen sharing, uploading finished work back to a company server, and holding a VPN tunnel open without it dropping. The last three differ from watching video in one important way — they rely on the upload direction, which is usually the weaker side of a mobile connection.

So when you pick a plan for a work trip, the question is not only how many gigabytes. It is also whether tethering to a laptop is permitted, whether the validity covers the day you fly home, and what your options are if the allowance runs out early. The answers vary by supplier and by destination country, which makes each plan page the real reference document — not general advice from any article, this one included.

The approach that works is to open the trip calendar and read it day by day: which days are meeting days, which are travel days, and which days you barely open the laptop. A five-day trip with two full days of online meetings consumes more than a ten-day trip spent at an exhibition stand using email and chat. Multiplying an average by the number of days usually misses, because on a work trip there is no average — the demand clusters into a handful of days.

Almost every business traveller does the real work on a laptop. The phone handles messages while walking, but documents, slides, spreadsheets and any meeting where you present live on the bigger machine. That means the allowance has to travel from the eSIM in your phone to the laptop over a hotspot most of the time. If the plan you bought does not permit that, you are left with a small screen and no comfortable way to write a long email.

Whether tethering is allowed is a property of the individual plan, not of eSIM technology in general. Some plans permit it outright, some permit it with a cap, and some do not permit it at all. Read the plan page every time before buying. If it still is not clear, ask us first — that is far better than discovering the limit in a hotel lobby ten minutes before a meeting.

The step people skip most often is the fifth. A ten-minute rehearsal removes nearly all of the hardest problems, because most tethering trouble is not caused by the eSIM at all. It comes from the laptop side: a corporate firewall, a network profile still expecting the office Wi-Fi, or a VPN configured to run only on certain networks.

Once you have signal, test two things before leaving the airport. First, open any web page to confirm data really flows. What that costs and how it behaves is set by your Thai carrier, so ask them directly before you fly.

Better still, where your organisation supports it, move your logins onto an authenticator app that generates codes on the device with no signal required. Do not leave the test until you are abroad: locking yourself out of a system across time zones can consume an entire working day.

Many companies require a VPN before you can reach internal files. VPNs work fine over mobile data, but two things are worth knowing in advance. First, the encryption adds a little overhead compared with a direct connection. Second, switching networks — hotel Wi-Fi to hotspot, say — usually drops the tunnel and forces a fresh login, which is especially irritating in the middle of a large upload.

In practice: settle which network you are on, then bring the VPN up, then start anything long-running. If you know a big upload is coming, do it while sitting still on one connection, not while walking between buildings. It is also worth asking IT in advance whether your systems block access from foreign IP addresses — some organisations do, and they need notice to whitelist your trip.

If you are arranging this for a team flying to the same event, message us with the head count, destinations and travel dates and we will prepare the QR codes as a batch with a summary sheet to hand out. That saves the coordinator from buying one at a time and then matching people to codes. Send them out at least a day ahead so everyone installs at home on their own Wi-Fi.

Business trips rarely stop at one city. Fly in, meet for two days, move on to the next country. When that is the shape of it you have two options. One regional plan covering the whole route means nothing to switch. Several single-country plans may cost less and match each stop's real usage, at the price of switching lines yourself at every border.

If you go the country-by-country route, install every profile before you fly, name each line after its city, and leave yourself one action on landing: change which line carries data. That way the moment you are most tired is the moment you have least to work out.

However well you prepare, the day the meeting room turns out to be in a basement with no signal still arrives. A workable fallback does not have to be elaborate. Know in advance whether the venue has Wi-Fi and who holds the password. Keep the organiser's phone number saved so you can warn them you will be five minutes late. And always keep the critical documents offline, so that even with no connection you can present from what is already on the machine.

Another habit among frequent travellers is to carry a small second plan for the same country, installed but with the line switched off. If the main one hits a problem you cannot solve in the moment, turning the spare on takes seconds. The cost of a small plan is usually far below the cost of missing a client meeting.
