Rotorua Airport (ROT) is small and handles mainly domestic flights, so most visitors actually arrive by road, driving down from Auckland or taking an intercity coach. The outer lakes, reached along rural roads, have stretches with genuinely nothing, and a boat moving away from the shore thins with distance. A day of geothermal parks and hot pools tends to be light — around a gigabyte or less — because the time goes on walking and photographing rather than staring at a screen. The number climbs once video starts going out, and steam, mud pools and cultural performances are exactly the things people film at length. Driving yourself adds navigation between attractions scattered around the town. Translation and booking apps take small sips many times over. The comfortable pattern is to let the mobile line carry maps, messages and bookings through the day and leave the long clips for the accommodation at night.

• Ngongotahā and the western lakeshore — A residential area with lakeside accommodation on the western shore; normal to use through the settlement, while the roads climbing the hill behind it go patchy on the slopes facing away from the water.

• Wai-O-Tapu and the geothermal road south — The road south alternates between plantation forest and open country, dropping out and coming back in places. Inside the parks themselves it usually works, since the ground is open. • Taupō and Huka Falls — The highway between the two towns is mostly usable and Taupō itself, on the big lake, is fine. The soft spots are the side roads to the lookouts and the riverside paths down in the gorge. Load this section's map before leaving Rotorua so you are not searching for the turn-off with no service.
• Lake Tarawera and the Buried Village — The road out to the further lakes runs through forest and over rises with long stretches of nothing, and once a boat moves away from the shore it thins with distance.
