Rotorua is a mid-sized town where the sulphur reaches you before the town centre does. Visitors here split between families bringing children to see the mud pools, groups who came to ride the forest trails, and people who came specifically for Māori cultural experiences. What makes it unlike Auckland or Wellington is that almost every attraction is a large outdoor space — geothermal parks, pine forest, and a scatter of lakes. In town the line runs normally. The difference shows once you are deep among the trees or out at the further lakes.

Rotorua Airport (ROT) is small and handles mainly domestic flights, so most visitors actually arrive by road, driving down from Auckland or taking an intercity coach. If you do fly in, switch the eSIM on at landing and sort the rental or the transfer straight away — the terminal is small and you are at the car park within minutes. Coming by road, have the line working before you leave your starting town and load the map for the full route, because the middle of the drive runs through farmland and plantation forest where coverage is less continuous than in a city. It returns to normal as soon as you are inside the town boundary.

In town, along the lakefront and on the main streets the line is continuous, as you would expect of a mid-sized place. The geothermal parks sit mostly in open ground with formed walkways and generally stay usable, although corners that drop into a hollow or sit behind a rise weaken. The pine forest where everyone rides is a different matter: heavy canopy plus rolling terrain breaks the signal up once you are well in. The outer lakes, reached along rural roads, have stretches with genuinely nothing, and a boat moving away from the shore thins with distance. If a long ride or walk is planned, download the map area while you are still in town.

A day of geothermal parks and hot pools tends to be light — around a gigabyte or less — because the time goes on walking and photographing rather than staring at a screen. The number climbs once video starts going out, and steam, mud pools and cultural performances are exactly the things people film at length. Driving yourself adds navigation between attractions scattered around the town. Translation and booking apps take small sips many times over. The comfortable pattern is to let the mobile line carry maps, messages and bookings through the day and leave the long clips for the accommodation at night.

• The lakefront and Government Gardens — The waterside path, the small jetties and the old buildings in the gardens sit close together and the line is good across the whole area. Early morning, when steam drifts off the water, is when most of the photographs get taken.
• Whakarewarewa and the Redwoods — The southern side of town, with geothermal ground on one hand and tall pine forest for walking and riding on the other. Near the entrances and car parks it works, but under the dense canopy further in it breaks up, so save your route before you head in.
• Fenton Street — A long street lined with accommodation, restaurants and tour pickup points, with a good signal along its length. A practical place to confirm a booking or wait for a shuttle without worrying about the connection.
• Ngongotahā and the western lakeshore — A residential area with lakeside accommodation on the western shore; normal to use through the settlement, while the roads climbing the hill behind it go patchy on the slopes facing away from the water.

• Wai-O-Tapu and the geothermal road south — The road south alternates between plantation forest and open country, dropping out and coming back in places. Inside the parks themselves it usually works, since the ground is open. Opening hours and scheduled activities vary by season at each site, so check that park's own website on the day you plan to go rather than working from an older itinerary.
• Taupō and Huka Falls — The highway between the two towns is mostly usable and Taupō itself, on the big lake, is fine. The soft spots are the side roads to the lookouts and the riverside paths down in the gorge. Load this section's map before leaving Rotorua so you are not searching for the turn-off with no service.
• Lake Tarawera and the Buried Village — The road out to the further lakes runs through forest and over rises with long stretches of nothing, and once a boat moves away from the shore it thins with distance. Save your return meeting time and the operator's number to the phone before you leave town, and tell anyone waiting that you will be back in touch when you return to the town centre.
