Most visitors use very little, perhaps 200 to 500MB a day for messaging, email and the occasional photo upload, because long stretches of the day are spent on the road or at sites where taking the phone out is not welcome.

Damascus International (DAM) is the main air gateway, while Aleppo (ALP) and Bassel Al-Assad near Latakia (LTK) handle far fewer flights. Many travellers still arrive overland: from Beirut through Jdeidet Yabous, from Jordan at Nassib and Jaber, or from Turkiye at Bab al-Hawa. Expect long waits and phone checks at every one of them.

Signal follows the populated corridor from Damascus north through Homs and Hama to Aleppo, and along the coast at Latakia and Tartus. It thins quickly east of the Euphrates, across the Badia desert towards Palmyra and Deir ez-Zor, and in the Anti-Lebanon and Jebel Ansariyah highlands, where rebuilt infrastructure is still uneven.

Will my own phone roam in Syria?+
That depends entirely on whether your home carrier still has a roaming agreement with a Syrian network, and many do not because of sanctions restrictions. Most travellers end up on a local SIM arranged by their host, which is registered against a passport and sometimes needs supporting paperwork. Ask your carrier for a written answer before you fly rather than assuming.
Should I download offline maps before arriving?+
Yes, and do it while you are still outside the country. Download the whole country map, and save your hotel address, meeting points and your fixer's number somewhere that works offline. During the gap before you get service, and while waiting at a crossing, you will not be able to look anything up, and in some places opening a map app in front of officials is not a good idea either.
Can I use my phone or take photos at checkpoints?+
Do not photograph checkpoints, government buildings or anything military, and keep the phone in your bag as you approach one. Officers can and regularly do ask to look through a device. Let your local fixer do the talking, and read your foreign ministry's current advisory before the trip rather than relying on what someone posted last year.
