Yemen eSIM
Yemen is not an ordinary destination. The mainland remains a war zone split between rival administrations, and most foreigners who actually get in fly straight to the island of Socotra on a charter arranged by an operator who holds the permit. Data there is about sending a short message that you are safe and confirming the next flight, not about living online the way you would elsewhere.

Around 100 to 300MB a day is usually enough, because the real use is a few messages and a couple of photos. On Socotra most nights are spent at camps with no service at all, so the pattern is short bursts of connectivity rather than steady use.

Which airports are usable changes from season to season. Aden (ADE) and Sanaa (SAH) run very limited service, while Seiyun (GXF) and Riyan at Mukalla (RIY) handle domestic and regional flights. Visitors to Socotra (SCT) normally take a charter from Abu Dhabi or a flight routed through Seiyun. There is also an overland route from Oman into the Al Mahrah governorate.

On the mainland, service clusters in cities such as Sanaa, Aden, Taiz and Mukalla, and it is cut or degraded according to the situation. On Socotra there is coverage around Hadibo and along parts of the main road only. The Dixam plateau, Detwah lagoon and the camps at Homhil and along the south coast have nothing at all, which is where most nights of a Socotra trip are spent.

When do Socotra flights and boats stop running?+
During the southwest monsoon, roughly June to September, the wind is strong enough that cargo boats from the mainland stop and flight schedules become unreliable. Most operators run trips between October and May instead. If you travel near the edge of the season, build spare days into the plan, because a flight slipping by several days is normal here rather than exceptional.
Do I need a special permit for Yemen or Socotra?+
Yes, and it is not something a traveller can file alone. A licensed operator has to obtain it from whichever authority controls the area you are entering, and because different parts of the country are under different administrations, a Socotra approval does not cover the mainland. Get written confirmation from your operator before you buy a ticket, not after.
How do I stay in touch from the island?+
Agree with people at home in advance that contact will come in bursts rather than daily, and send your message when you pass back through Hadibo or another spot with service. Guides usually carry a local line and will let you send a short message. Groups going into remote areas for several days often carry a rented satellite communicator for emergencies.
