Missed a connecting flight: one ticket and separate tickets are very different

Missed a connecting flight: one ticket and separate tickets are very different

إجابة سريعة

  • First see whether both flights sit on the same booking. If they do and the first flight ran late, the airline usually handles rebooking, though details depend on the airline and country.
  • On separate tickets the second airline is not obliged to wait or rebook, and you may need to buy a new ticket and handle your bags yourself, so leave generous connection time.
  • Do not leave the transit area before asking whether you must pass immigration and collect bags, since you may need a visa or documents for a country where you are only stopping.

Start with one question: is it one ticket or several?

Everything after this depends on the answer. If both flights are issued under one booking (one reference or consecutive ticket numbers), the airline treats it as a single journey and usually takes responsibility for rebooking when its own part runs late. If you bought two tickets separately, the second airline sees two unrelated purchases.

Ticket typeWhat generally followsما يجب فعله
One ticket (one booking)The airline usually rebooks you if the cause was its earlier flightGo to the transfer desk or airline counter for a new ticket
Separate ticketsThe second airline has no duty for your late arrivalAsk about changing or buying a new ticket, and check your checked bags
Codeshare or alliance flightsSometimes one ticket on another airline's plane, so ask who is responsible
You can see this in your confirmation email. If both flights appear under one booking reference, it is one ticket. If you have two separate emails, they are usually separate tickets.

As soon as you realise you will not make it: first steps

  1. 1Keep movingIf there is still time, go straight to the gate or transfer desk and tell staff immediately that you are connecting.
  2. 2Go to the transfer or airline deskShow your boarding passes and booking reference. On a single ticket, ask for a new flight, and ask about meals or a room if you must wait.
  3. 3Ask about your bagsAsk whether your bags are checked through to the final destination or whether you must collect them.
  4. 4Ask about immigrationIf you must stay overnight or leave the transit area, ask whether you must go through immigration or need a visa.
  5. 5Get confirmationCollect the new ticket, hotel voucher or confirmation email before you leave the counter.
A country where you only transit may require a transit visa or special documents if you must leave the transit area. Rules change. This page was last checked in October 2026 and the official source, such as the embassy or immigration authority, decides.

Separate tickets: options and risks

On separate tickets, if you miss the second flight it counts as a no-show. Possible options include asking to change the second ticket (often with a fee and fare difference) or buying a new one. Either may cost you money, so ask the second airline as early as you can.

  • If you have checked bags, find out whether they went to the final destination or wait at the connection point. Separate tickets usually mean collecting bags and checking in again.
  • If you must enter the country to collect bags, check the entry rules first.
  • On low-cost carriers, check the change rules of each ticket, which can be strict.

To avoid this in future, leave much more connection time if you must buy separately, and consider a single ticket where possible. Our guide on connections, layovers and stopovers covers the ideas.

Bags, lodging and care while you wait

On a single ticket the airline often helps with meals or a room where it is responsible, but the scope varies with route, airline and country. Do not assume. Ask staff, and ask how to submit receipts.

  • Keep every receipt for meals, lodging and transport.
  • Photograph notices or handouts given to passengers who missed connections.
  • Keep essentials such as medication, chargers and a change of clothes in your carry-on in case your checked bag does not arrive with you.
  • If a bag does not follow, report it at the baggage desk and keep the irregularity report.
If you are at an unfamiliar airport late at night, choose lodging and transport that feel safe, and keep proof. Safety matters more than a small saving.

Telling your destination and onward bookings

Once you know the new flight, tell your destination hotel, pick-up, transfer, tour operators and any organiser. If you must attend something timed, such as a meeting or ceremony, say at once that you will be late and ask about options.

If the new flight lands late at night or on the next day, check your accommodation's late check-in options and reconsider any appointments the following day.

Insurance and card cover

Some travel insurance and cards cover missed connections, but only within the policy's conditions, for example paying with that card or the cause being a listed one, and usually with a deadline to notify. Contact the provider early and ask which documents are needed, such as a letter from the airline.

Keep it all together: the original tickets, boarding passes, new ticket, any letter or email from the airline, and every receipt.

Staying connected and preparing ahead

At a connection point you lean heavily on your phone: checking the new flight, telling your destination and opening tickets. Airport Wi-Fi often needs a sign-in or has limits, and can be crowded when many passengers are stranded. An eSIM or roaming pack gives you data as soon as you land, but check that the plan covers both the stopover country and your destination.

  • Keep your main SIM for SMS and OTP codes.
  • Download tickets and boarding passes for offline use.
  • Install the airline app and enable notifications.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Who is responsible if my first flight was late and I missed the connection?+

On a single ticket the airline usually arranges a new flight, but the scope of care and rights depends on route, airline and country. On separate tickets the second airline is usually not responsible.

Do I have to collect my bag at the connection point?+

It depends on whether it is a single ticket with bags checked through. Ask staff at once. On separate tickets you usually collect and re-check, which may mean passing immigration.

Do I need a visa if I must stay overnight at the connection point?+

It depends on the country, your nationality and whether you must leave the transit area. Rules change, so check with the airline and the immigration authority or embassy of that country.

How long should a connection be?+

There is no single number that fits every case. Large airports, terminal changes, immigration and separate tickets all need more time. Check the minimum connection time stated by the airline or airport and add a buffer, especially on separate tickets.
