Before you buy for Mauritania
Every Mauritania eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.
How much data you actually need
In town, roughly 300MB–800MB a day covers messaging, maps and photos. On desert days you often use almost nothing, simply because there is no service to use.
When you land
The main gateway is Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC), with Nouadhibou International (NDB) in the north. Overland, people come from Morocco through the Guerguerat post or cross from Senegal at the Rosso ferry, which is slow and chaotic. Have your documents and your accommodation address saved offline before you reach either.
Where coverage changes
Nouakchott, Nouadhibou and the main road between them work normally, as does the Route de l'Espoir heading east. Turn into the Adrar towards Atar, Chinguetti, Ouadane or down to Terjit and service survives only in the towns themselves. The iron ore train route and the Banc d'Arguin coast are simply without coverage.

Can I contact anyone on the iron ore train?+
Effectively not. The line runs hundreds of kilometres across open desert and takes well over ten hours with no network the whole way. Tell whoever is expecting you that you will be silent overnight before you board, and bring water, food, something to cover your face against the dust and a power bank, because there is nothing to charge from on the train.
Do I need a guide for the Adrar region?+
In practice, yes. Desert routes are not signposted, online maps are useless once you lose signal, and finding a lift back from a small village is hard. Most visitors hire a car with a driver out of Atar. Agree the price, the route and the number of days while you are still in town with data, rather than negotiating from somewhere with no way to compare.
What should I sort out for visas and cash?+
Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport or at a land border, but the rules and fees change, so confirm with the embassy before you fly rather than trusting an old forum post. Inside the country almost everything is cash in ouguiya and card acceptance is very limited, so draw enough before you leave Nouakchott or Atar.
When does a Mauritania eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
