The main gateway is Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC), with Nouadhibou International (NDB) in the north. Overland, people come from Morocco through the Guerguerat post or cross from Senegal at the Rosso ferry, which is slow and chaotic. Have your documents and your accommodation address saved offline before you reach either.

Turn into the Adrar towards Atar, Chinguetti, Ouadane or down to Terjit and service survives only in the towns themselves. Can I contact anyone on the iron ore train?+
Effectively not. The line runs hundreds of kilometres across open desert and takes well over ten hours with no network the whole way. Tell whoever is expecting you that you will be silent overnight before you board, and bring water, food, something to cover your face against the dust and a power bank, because there is nothing to charge from on the train.
Do I need a guide for the Adrar region?+
In practice, yes. Desert routes are not signposted, online maps are useless once you lose signal, and finding a lift back from a small village is hard. Most visitors hire a car with a driver out of Atar. Agree the price, the route and the number of days while you are still in town with data, rather than negotiating from somewhere with no way to compare.
What should I sort out for visas and cash?+
Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport or at a land border, but the rules and fees change, so confirm with the embassy before you fly rather than trusting an old forum post. Inside the country almost everything is cash in ouguiya and card acceptance is very limited, so draw enough before you leave Nouakchott or Atar.
