What HBA is like

Hobart is a small airport handling mostly domestic flights, and it is the main way into southern Tasmania. The building is compact, so arriving is quick and uncomplicated. What makes it different from a mainland airport is what waits outside: Tasmania has large areas of forest and mountain with no masts at all, not merely weak signal. Almost everyone who lands here picks up a car, and the itinerary usually leads into exactly that kind of country within the first day or two.

Because these are mostly domestic arrivals, you walk from the aircraft to the belt and out without border control, though rules on bringing plant material onto the island are real and enforced, so check your own bag again before you leave. That is not a criticism of the airport, just the geography of the island.

The building is small enough that congestion is rarely the issue. Use the time well, though, because once you drive west or up onto the plateau, Wi-Fi becomes as scarce as mobile signal. Many remote guesthouses have only a limited connection of their own, so an evening of uploading large files is not something to promise anyone. Plan the online part of your trip around the towns, not around the scenery.

Every way out is by road: airport coach, taxi or hire car, about twenty minutes to the city centre on a clear run, and that leg barely touches your data. The part that needs thought is driving across the island. Routes between the main towns keep service along the highway, but the roads into the national parks and out to the west coast are silent for hours at a time. Assume your navigation has to work offline, and tell tonight's accommodation roughly when to expect you. Doing that once at the start of a Tasmanian trip saves a lot of worry later.
