  • When you book a hotel or flight by credit card, check three things: the currency the site charges in (baht or foreign), whether you pay now or at the hotel, and that the traveller name matches the passport. Then read your card's terms on foreign transaction fees, because even if the site feels local, your bank may still treat the charge as foreign.
  • We do not rank Agoda, Booking.com, Trip.com, Expedia or any airline, and we do not say which platform is cheaper. Use this guide as a pre-payment checklist and check the live price on the booking page yourself.

Credit cards for trip bookings: what to watch when you pay

An online booking is not a card swipe at a counter, so your bank may treat it differently, and booking sites offer choices that affect the final amount: the currency charged, when you pay and the cancellation policy. Think of it as four questions before you confirm.

  1. What currency will the site charge, and does it match the amount I see?
  2. Do I pay now or at the hotel, and is there a hold if I pay at the hotel?
  3. Does the name on the booking match my passport and, if needed, my card?
  4. What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com, Expedia: choosing the payment currency

Booking sites often display prices in a currency you choose or one the system guesses from your location, but the currency actually charged may be different. On the confirmation page, look at which currency is labelled as the amount charged, and whether there is a note about currency conversion.

Pay now versus pay at the property

Some bookings ask you to pay now; others let you pay at the hotel, using the card as a guarantee, and different rooms may have different cancellation policies. Read the details on the booking page before choosing.

  • Pay now: the charge is taken immediately or later per the site's terms. Check the refund policy before confirming.
  • Pay at the property: the hotel may place a hold on your card at check-in and charge at checkout. Ask what is held and when it is released.
  • If you do not turn up (no-show), some properties may charge per their terms. Read the policy before booking.
  • Keep the confirmation email and a screenshot of the final page.

Paying a hotel abroad by card at check-in

On arrival guests are often asked to show a passport and the card used for booking. The hotel may place a hold for incidentals, the terminal may ask about DCC, and some properties ask you to pay local taxes or fees separately at the hotel. Check the receipt and your bank app alert.

  • Carry the card used for the booking in case the hotel asks to match it.
  • Ask for a receipt and a checkout slip as evidence.
  • If an odd charge appears after checkout, contact the hotel first, then your bank if unresolved.

Booking flights, buying tickets and paying airlines by card

Whether you buy through an airline's site or an online agent, the seller may be a foreign company, so your bank can treat the charge as foreign even when the displayed price is in baht. If the site charges in another currency, a conversion also happens. Check your card's terms and the site's confirmation page.

  1. Enter passenger names exactly as on the passport, per the airline's rules.
  2. Review the final page for charges such as baggage, seats or payment fees.
  3. If you paid but received no confirmation email, contact the seller before trying again so you do not pay twice. See our guide on double charges and pending items abroad.
  4. Keep the booking, receipt and confirmation email until the trip is over.
Name changes, date changes and refunds follow the fare and seller rules. Check the actual policy from the airline or agent before paying.

Card name versus traveller name

The traveller's name must match the passport, but the name on the credit card does not always have to be the traveller. You may often pay for family or friends. Some hotels or airlines may ask to check the card or request extra proof when the cardholder is not travelling, so read the seller's terms in advance.

Your options when something goes wrong: cancellations, duplicates, disputes

  1. Contact the seller or hotel first with proof of booking and payment.
  2. If there is no answer or you were charged wrongly, contact your issuing bank through its official channel.
  3. Dispute rights and time limits vary by bank and network. Check your card terms or ask the bank directly, and do not wait until it is too late.
  4. Keep screenshots, emails, receipts and a log of your contacts.

The outcome of a dispute is not guaranteed and is up to the bank and the seller. This article is not legal advice.

Which airline or card for flights? Criteria, not a ranking

We do not rank any airline, booking platform or credit card. Use these criteria yourself.

  • The full live price including baggage and payment fees on the confirmation page.
  • The cancellation, change and refund rules of that fare.
  • The foreign fee and exchange rate in the terms of the card you will pay with.
  • Any card insurance or delay benefit; see our guide on card travel insurance and flight delay.
  • How to reach the seller and the bank if there is a problem.

Staying online while you book and travel

After booking you may need to open confirmation emails, check in online or receive bank alerts, all of which need data once you are at your destination. A data-only eSIM bought and installed online is one option; see the current plans on the eSIM page.

שאלות נפוצות

שאלות נפוצות

What currency is my card charged when I book on Agoda or Booking.com?+

It depends on each site's confirmation page and the option you choose. Look for the line that states the charged currency and compare it with your card's terms.

Does my bank count Trip.com or Expedia payments as foreign?+

It may or may not, depending on the merchant country in your bank's system. Check your statement for a foreign transaction fee and ask the bank.

Is paying at the hotel or paying now better?+

Neither is always better. It depends on the room's cancellation terms and any check-in hold. Check the details on the booking page and compare the final totals.

Does the card name have to match the traveller's name?+

The traveller name must match the passport, but the card name need not always be the traveller. Some sellers may ask for extra checks, so read the seller's terms.

I paid for a flight but got no confirmation email. What now?+

Check spam, check the booking status on the site and contact the seller before buying again. If you were charged twice, contact the seller and your bank.

Which credit card is best for flights?+

We do not rank cards. Terms change and suit people differently. Use the criteria above and check the latest terms with the bank.

When should I dispute a wrong charge?+

Contact the seller first, then the bank promptly, since dispute time limits vary by bank and network. Keep all evidence.
