Eurostar from St Pancras takes about two and a half hours, but Thai passport holders need a Schengen visa first and pass French border control in London.

  • Most Eurostar trains from London St Pancras International to Paris Gare du Nord take about 2 hours 16 minutes, or roughly two and a half hours.
  • Thai citizens need a Schengen visa to enter France; a UK visa does not allow entry to the Schengen area, and a Schengen visa does not allow entry to the UK.
  • Both the UK exit check and French passport control take place in London before boarding, and gates close 30 minutes before departure for Standard and Plus tickets.

The Eurostar from London St Pancras International to Paris Gare du Nord takes about 2 hours 16 minutes. Thai passengers need a Schengen visa before booking, because French immigration checks happen in London before boarding, not in Paris. Plan for those checks when choosing your arrival time at the station.

Why do you pass French controls in London, and what is EES?

Eurostar uses juxtaposed controls, so French officers check passports at St Pancras before you board. According to the EU Delegation to the UK, the Entry/Exit System (EES) began on 12 October 2025 and reached full operation on 10 April 2026. Eurostar passengers register for EES on departure in London, overseen by French border officers, with kiosks in the terminal.

Do Thais need a Schengen visa, and what passport validity is required?

Yes. France, Belgium and the Netherlands, the places Eurostar serves, are in the Schengen area, and Thais must obtain a Schengen visa before travelling even with a UK visa. The UK is not in the EU and not in Schengen.

  • Your passport must be issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area.
  • ETIAS is only for visa-exempt travellers; Thais need a Schengen visa, so ETIAS does not apply to them, according to the EU's official site.
  • Check that your Schengen visa covers your dates and destination country.
EES, ETIAS and visa rules change. This information was last checked in October 2026, and no confirmed ETIAS start date existed then. Check the EU's official site and Eurostar before you travel.

Does Eurostar go anywhere besides Paris?

Eurostar also runs to Brussels and Amsterdam/Rotterdam. The same logic applies: you clear border control in London before boarding, and you need a Schengen visa valid for the destination. If you plan to continue to other Schengen countries, check the conditions of the visa you were granted.

At Paris Gare du Nord there is no further immigration check, so you can leave the platform straight away and take the metro or a taxi to your hotel. Download an offline map beforehand.

When should you arrive at St Pancras, and when do the gates close?

Eurostar's check-in page says gates close 30 minutes before departure for Standard and Plus tickets and 15 minutes for Premier. Arrive at the time shown on your ticket and earlier at busy times, because you also pass the UK exit check and French control.

  1. 1Arrive at the time on your ticketOpen your phone ticket and keep your passport and Schengen visa easy to reach.
  2. 2Pass securityPlace bags on the belt, as at an airport.
  3. 3Exit and French controlClear the UK officer, then the French officer and EES.
  4. 4Wait in the departure area and boardGo to the platform when boarding is called, before gates close.

What luggage can you take on Eurostar?

Standard and Plus tickets allow 2 large bags plus 1 hand item, according to Eurostar's luggage page, which also lists size rules to check before you pack. There is no separate bag check-in as on an airline, so you carry bags onto the train yourself.

Keep what you need on the way, such as your passport, visa and phone, in a small bag you can reach quickly. You will take them out at several points between the ticket check and the border desks, so do not bury them in a large suitcase.

How do you re-enter the UK after Paris?

On the way back, UK Border Force officers check you at Paris Gare du Nord before boarding, not in London. Thai passport holders cannot use the eGates, so you queue to see an officer. Make sure your UK visa or eVisa in your UKVI account is still valid, your permitted stay has not ended, and the visa allows re-entry.

If your bags hold goods covered by UK customs rules, check gov.uk before buying souvenirs in France. Check the rules on meat and dairy in particular.

How does mobile data help on a London to Paris trip?

Your Eurostar ticket lives in an app or email, and you may need to open it at kiosks, at control points and at the gate, so save tickets, hotel bookings and visa papers on your phone where they open without data. Some Europe plans exclude the UK and UK plans exclude France, so check each plan's country list for both the United Kingdom and France; an eSIM covering both means no switching mid-trip.
