תשובה מהירה

  • Two to three days covers the Terracotta Army, City Wall, Muslim Quarter and towers, with Huashan as an extra.
  • Reach the Terracotta Army by tourist bus, regional train or ride-hailing from the city.
  • Book the Beijing high-speed train on 12306 with the passport you will carry, and expect to arrive at Xi'an North.

Why Xi'an

Xi'an (西安) was the capital of several dynasties and is the eastern end of the old Silk Road. It combines the Terracotta Army, a complete Ming-era city wall and a lively Muslim Quarter, all in a compact centre. Two to three days is enough for the highlights, and Huashan can be added as a long day trip.

Thai ordinary-passport holders can currently enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days per entry for tourism. Rules can change, so confirm with the Chinese embassy or consulate or the National Immigration Administration before you go. Last checked October 2026.

Arriving by high-speed rail

From Beijing, the high-speed train runs to Xi'an North Station (西安北站), which is well outside the old centre. Book on the official 12306 app or website in its English version, which accepts foreign passports. Bring the same passport you booked with and arrive early for security. From Xi'an North, metro line 2 runs towards the centre, and taxis and ride-hailing apps are also available. Check the current timetable on 12306.

Terracotta Army and how to get there

The Terracotta Army (兵马俑, Bingmayong) lies in Lintong district about 40 kilometres east of the city centre. It is the burial complex of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor, with three main pits and a museum. Check ticketing and timed-entry rules on the official site before going.

The Shaanxi History Museum is a strong rainy-day option and explains the dynasties behind everything else you see. Reservations and entry rules apply, so check the official site before you plan around it.

  1. 1Tourist bus or trainTourist buses run from the area near Xi'an Railway Station; a regional train to Lintong is another option. Confirm the current stops on Amap or the official site.
  2. 2מונית או שירות הסעה בהזמנהSimplest for groups; ask the driver to wait or arrange the return in advance, since taxis are harder to find at the site.
  3. 3Guided day tourUseful if you want explanations in English; check the operator's reviews and reservation terms.

Inside the city

  • City Wall (城墙, Chengqiang): one of the best-preserved ancient walls in China. You can walk or cycle along the top; rental bikes are available at the main gates, and the loop takes a couple of hours.
  • Muslim Quarter (回民街, Huimin Jie): lanes behind the Drum Tower full of food stalls. Try roujiamo (meat in flatbread), yangrou paomo (lamb soup with bread) and liangpi (cold noodles). Eat from busy stalls and ask about ingredients if you avoid certain meats.
  • Bell Tower and Drum Tower (钟楼, 鼓楼): Ming-era towers in the city centre, lit up at night and a few minutes' walk apart.
  • Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔, Dayanta): a Tang-dynasty Buddhist pagoda in the south; the square nearby has an evening fountain show.

Huashan day trip

Huashan (华山) is a steep granite mountain about two hours from Xi'an by high-speed train to Huashan North Station, followed by a short bus or shuttle ride to the visitor centre. It is a demanding hike with cable-car options, so check the official booking system, weather and safety notices, and avoid it if you have a fear of heights.

A 2-3 day plan

  1. 1יום 1Terracotta Army in the morning, return to the centre, then Bell Tower, Drum Tower and the Muslim Quarter in the evening.
  2. 2יום 2Cycle the City Wall, visit the Shaanxi History Museum if booked, and see Big Wild Goose Pagoda at dusk.
  3. 3Day 3 (optional)Huashan if you are fit and the weather is good.

Data, payments and tips

Many foreign services such as Google, LINE, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are usually not reachable on mainland networks or hotel Wi-Fi. A travel eSIM from a non-Chinese provider usually routes data through a gateway outside the mainland, like roaming, so these apps usually open on it. Nobody can guarantee every app on every network, so test before you rely on it, and keep your Thai SIM on for SMS and bank OTP. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign Visa or Mastercard and verify your passport before the trip, and carry some cash and a physical card as backup.

Many sights check passports at the gate, so carry yours in a bag rather than leaving it at the hotel.

Where to stay and common mistakes

Stay inside the city wall near the Bell Tower or South Gate for walkable sights and metro lines 2 and 1; the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area suits a quieter, more modern stay. Avoid hotels beside Xi'an North Station unless you have a very early train.

  • Booking a Terracotta Army trip without a return plan, then struggling to find transport back.
  • Cycling the wall without checking that the section is open or that your rental closes in time.
  • Trying Huashan after a late night, in poor weather or without checking the official safety notice.
  • Arriving at the station late; Xi'an North is large and security queues take time.
