त्वरित उत्तर

  • Take the MTR to Tung Chung (東涌), then ride the Ngong Ping 360 cable car or a bus up to Ngong Ping, where the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery and Wisdom Path sit close together.
  • The cable car closes for scheduled maintenance on some days each year, so check np360.com.hk before fixing your date; a bus is the fallback.
  • After Ngong Ping, a bus takes you to Tai O, the fishing village known for its stilt houses, and you can finish back in Tung Chung.

Getting to Tung Chung

Lantau is the largest island in Hong Kong and also home to the airport. Visitors usually start at Tung Chung MTR station, at the end of the Tung Chung line. From Central or Hong Kong station the ride is direct on that line, and Octopus or a contactless card opens the gates. Tung Chung also has a bus terminus and, next to the cable car terminal, a small town with cafes.

Ngong Ping 360 cable car

The Ngong Ping 360 cable car runs from Tung Chung up over the bay and hills to Ngong Ping. The ride takes in the airport, the sea and the mountain ridges, and it is a highlight in its own right. There are standard cabins and crystal cabins with a glass floor, and sales channels for each; check the official site for what is on offer and how to book.

Cabin typeयह क्या हैChoose it if
Standard cabinEnclosed cabin with a solid floorYou dislike heights or want the simplest option
Crystal cabinCabin with a glass floorYou want a view straight down
Ngong Ping 360 closes for scheduled maintenance on some days each year, and strong wind or bad weather can also stop it. Check np360.com.hk for closure dates and today's status before you travel (last checked October 2026).

Bus alternative

If the cable car is closed or the queue is long, a bus runs from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping along the mountain road. It takes longer and shows a different side of the island. Check the current route number and timetable in the HKeMobility app or on the bus operator's site, and pay with Octopus.

Big Buddha, Po Lin and Wisdom Path

  • Tian Tan Buddha (天壇大佛): the bronze seated Buddha, known as the Big Buddha, on a hill above Ngong Ping; climb the stairway for close views.
  • Po Lin Monastery (寶蓮禪寺): the Buddhist monastery next to the Buddha; dress modestly, keep your voice low and ask before photographing worshippers.
  • Wisdom Path: a short walk from the monastery with wooden columns inscribed with a Buddhist text, set among hills with open views.

Allow a couple of hours at Ngong Ping rather than rushing. The stairway up to the Buddha is the main effort, and the platform at the top gives a wide view over the hills and the sea. Respect any signs about quiet areas and which parts are open to visitors, since the monastery is an active place of worship.

The Ngong Ping Village area near the cable car terminal has shops and restaurants, so you can eat before or after the sights. Mobile data helps for maps and translation, and a small data allowance covers a day like this.

Tai O stilt-house village

Tai O (大澳) is a fishing village on the western tip of Lantau, known for its stilt houses over the tidal creek, small bridges, dried seafood shops and snack stalls. Take a bus from Ngong Ping or from Tung Chung. Walk the lanes, see the stilt houses from the footbridges and try local snacks. Some boat trips on the creek or to look for dolphins may run; confirm availability locally.

Tai O is a living community. Keep to public paths, do not photograph into homes and bring any rubbish back out with you.

Practical tips for Lantau

  • Wear comfortable shoes: the Buddha stairway, Wisdom Path and Tai O lanes involve a lot of walking and some steps.
  • Bring water, sun protection and a light layer; it is often cooler and windier at Ngong Ping than in Tung Chung.
  • Pick a clear day: low cloud can hide the Buddha and the cable car views, so check the Hong Kong Observatory forecast.
  • Save offline maps and screenshots of the return bus details in case signal drops on the mountain.

Suggested order for the day

  1. 1Early start at Tung ChungArrive before the crowds, check the cable car status and ride up. Optional: browse the Citygate outlets near the station afterwards or before.
  2. 2Late morning at Ngong PingSee the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery and Wisdom Path, then have lunch in the village.
  3. 3Afternoon at Tai OTake the bus down to Tai O and walk the village.
  4. 4Return before darkBus back to Tung Chung and the MTR; leave extra time, since the last services matter on an island.
Bus routes, timetables and last services change; confirm them in HKeMobility or on the operator's site on the day (last checked October 2026). Hong Kong Observatory warnings can close the cable car and buses.
