त्वरित उत्तर

  • With 7 days, pick one island: the South Island loop of Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Queenstown and Milford Sound works well.
  • With 10 days, add Wanaka and a night in Te Anau for an unhurried Milford Sound day; 14 days is enough to cover both islands.
  • For a two-island trip, fly into Auckland (AKL), out of Queenstown (ZQN) or Christchurch (CHC), and cross Cook Strait on the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry, about 3.5 hours.

Plan a New Zealand trip by length: 7 days covers one island, 10 days gives the South Island room to breathe, and 14 days covers both the North Island and the South Island. Fly into one city and out of another so you never drive back the same way, and keep a spare day for mountain weather.

This guide gives concrete day plans. If you have not yet chosen an island, read “New Zealand road trip guide: North vs South Island, seasons, driving and staying connected” first, which compares the North Island and the South Island in broad terms.

Which airports should you fly in and out of?

As of October 2026 there is no non-stop Bangkok–Auckland flight, so Thai travellers connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Sydney or Melbourne. Booking an open-jaw ticket, arriving in one city and leaving from another, saves one or two days of driving.

What does a 7-day South Island plan look like?

The cleanest route is in at Christchurch and out at Queenstown. Mackenzie Region tourism describes Lake Tekapo as about 3 hours from Christchurch.

  1. Day 1: land in Christchurch, collect the rental car, stay in the city.
  2. Day 2: drive to Lake Tekapo; at night, stargaze in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
  3. Day 3: Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Hooker Valley Track, about 5 km and 1.5 hours each way according to DOC.
  4. Day 4: drive on to Queenstown; check the drive time in a mapping app before you leave.
  5. Day 5: Queenstown town and lakefront.
  6. Day 6: drive to Te Anau (171 km, about 2 hours), then Milford Sound; DOC says allow 8 hours for the return trip from Te Anau including a cruise.
  7. Day 7: return to Queenstown and fly out of ZQN.

How should you plan 7 days on the North Island?

The North Island works best in at Auckland and out at Wellington. The core stops are Auckland, Hobbiton near Matamata, Rotorua and Waitomo; check the drive times between them in a mapping app and treat them as approximate.

  • Days 1–2: Auckland, using the AT AirportLink bus and train into the city, with no car yet.
  • Day 3: pick up a car, visit Hobbiton, overnight in Rotorua.
  • Day 4: a full day in Rotorua.
  • Day 5: the Waitomo caves.
  • Day 6: drive south to Wellington, the longest driving day, so start early.
  • Day 7: Wellington, then fly out of WLG.

How do you stretch the South Island to 10 days?

Keep the 7-day route and add two nights in Wanaka and one in Te Anau. Destination Queenstown gives Queenstown to Wanaka as about 67 km: roughly 1 hour over the Crown Range Road, New Zealand's highest main road, or about 1 hour 20 minutes via Cromwell.

Can you cover both islands in 14 days?

Yes, if you fly into Auckland, out of Queenstown, and cross Cook Strait in the middle. This plan gives 6 days to the North Island and 8 to the South Island.

  1. 1Days 1–4: Auckland, Hobbiton, RotoruaTwo days in Auckland, then a car to Hobbiton and two nights in Rotorua.
  2. 2Days 5–6: वेलिंगटनDrive south to Wellington and spend a night there before the ferry.
  3. 3Day 7: ferry to PictonSail for about 3.5 hours and stay near Picton.
  4. 4Days 8–10: Christchurch, Tekapo, Mount CookDrive down to Christchurch, then on to Lake Tekapo and Aoraki/Mount Cook.
  5. 5Days 11–14: Queenstown, Te Anau, Milford SoundTwo nights in Queenstown, one in Te Anau for Milford Sound, then fly out of ZQN.

If you would rather skip the drive from Picton to Christchurch, return the car in Wellington and fly to Queenstown or Christchurch instead; ZQN has direct flights from Wellington.

How does the Cook Strait ferry fit into the plan?

Interislander and Bluebridge both sail between Wellington and Picton in about 3.5 hours. Interislander's timetable currently shows two ships, Kaitaki and Kaiarahi, with 4 sailings each way, and some overnight sailings carry freight only. Bluebridge runs Livia and Connemara. If you take a vehicle across in summer (December to February), book ahead.

Ferry timetables, flight routes and road conditions change. Check current fares and sailings on the official Interislander and Bluebridge sites (last checked October 2026).

How should you handle mobile data on long drives?

Long drives depend on live maps, road-closure updates and accommodation bookings on your phone. All 3G networks in New Zealand are now closed: the Telecommunications Forum confirmed the nationwide shutdown on 2 April 2026, so your phone needs 4G with VoLTE.

  • One NZ says VoLTE is not supported while roaming in New Zealand, so a roaming Thai SIM may fail to make or receive calls in 4G-only areas.
  • DOC says coverage on the Milford Road is limited outside Te Anau; there are card phones at Knobs Flat and Milford Sound and an emergency phone at the Homer Tunnel.
  • Download offline maps for every leg before you set off and save booking confirmations on the phone.
  • A local SIM or eSIM on a VoLTE-capable phone is the safer choice than roaming.
Network rules such as the 3G closure and VoLTE support while roaming can change; check the current details on the carriers' official sites (last checked October 2026).
