त्वरित उत्तर

  • The classic way up is the Peak Tram from its Garden Road lower terminus in Central, a short walk from the MTR.
  • Bus 15 from Central and taxis are the main alternatives when the tram queue is long, especially at sunset and on weekends.
  • Sky Terrace 428 at The Peak Tower is the paid viewing deck, while the Lugard Road walk gives free views of the same skyline.

Getting up to The Peak

Victoria Peak (太平山) is the highest point on Hong Kong Island and the city's best-known viewpoint over Victoria Harbour, Central and Kowloon. Almost every visitor goes up from Central, and there are three practical ways to do it.

Peak Tram

The Peak Tram is a funicular railway that climbs steeply from Garden Road to The Peak. The tram generation was renewed in 2022, so the cars are modern, but the route and the experience are the same. From Central MTR station, follow the signs towards Garden Road and the lower terminus; allow some walking time through the Central streets and the nearby park.

Bus 15 and taxis

Bus 15 runs from the Central side up the winding Peak Road and ends at The Peak. It is a good fallback when the tram line is long. A taxi is the quickest door-to-door choice, and you can ride the tram or bus down afterwards. Pay the bus with an Octopus card or contactless card; see “Transit Cards: Suica, T-money, Octopus and EasyCard” for how Octopus works.

Tram and bus services, queue arrangements and any maintenance closures can change. Check the Peak Tram and bus 15 information on the official sites before you go (last checked October 2026).

Queues and sunset timing

Queues at the Garden Road terminus are longest around sunset, on weekends and on public holidays. Many visitors want the same golden-hour view, so the tram line builds early in the afternoon. If sunset is your goal, arrive at Central well ahead of it, and be ready to switch to bus 15 if the line looks too long.

  • Go up in mid-afternoon, watch the light change, and come down after dark when the skyline is lit.
  • Weekday mornings are usually calmer than weekend evenings.
  • Check sunset time for the day in a weather app and work back from it.

Sky Terrace 428 and free viewpoints

The Peak Tower and the neighbouring Peak Galleria are the main buildings at the top. Sky Terrace 428 is the rooftop viewing deck of The Peak Tower, named for its height in metres, and it needs a separate ticket; check the current ticket details on the official site. Many people find the views from the free public areas around the buildings good enough.

Free viewpoints also surround the complex, and the viewing area facing the harbour is the busiest spot for photos. Walk a few minutes away from the crowd and you will usually find a quieter railing with the same outlook.

The Lugard Road walk

Lugard Road is a mostly level, paved path that loops around the western side of the hill, with open views over the harbour. It is free and suits most walkers. Start near The Peak Tower, follow the signs for Lugard Road, and you can circle back along Harlech Road.

Parts of the path are narrow and lit only lightly after dark. Bring a phone torch, wear flat shoes and stay on the marked route. Mobile data can be weaker among trees, so download an offline map first.

Best times and hazy days

Clear days give the sharpest view, and autumn (October to December) is usually the most comfortable and clearest season. Summer brings heat, humidity, cloud and typhoon-season weather from roughly May to November. Check the Hong Kong Observatory or the My Observatory app for visibility and warnings; if a No. 8 typhoon signal is raised, most transport and attractions close.

If the harbour is hidden by haze or cloud, do not force the trip. Swap the Peak for an indoor or low-level day in Central, or go up in the evening when city lights can still look striking through thin haze.

Combining The Peak with Central

  1. 1केंद्रीय में सुबहWalk the streets around Central MTR, Hong Kong Park and the Garden Road area before the crowds build.
  2. 2Afternoon up the hillTake the tram or bus 15, enjoy the viewpoints and walk part of Lugard Road.
  3. 3Evening back downReturn to Central for dinner, or ride the Star Ferry or a Ding Ding tram afterwards.
For the wider Central area see “Hong Kong on a Small Budget: Stays, Transport and Food Without Overspending”, and for staying online see “Hong Kong Trip Prep: Checklist, SIM, eSIM and Staying Online”. Maps and photo uploads on the hill use mobile data, so install your eSIM before you fly.

सामान्य प्रश्न

Is the Peak Tram or bus 15 better?+

The tram is the classic experience, while bus 15 is a good way to avoid a long queue and see the road from above. Many visitors take one up and the other down.

Do I need Sky Terrace 428?+

No. It is an optional paid deck. The free viewpoints and Lugard Road give similar views of the harbour.

What if it is hazy on the day?+

Check the Hong Kong Observatory first. If visibility is poor, move the Peak to another day or go in the evening, and spend the day at street level in Central.

Will my phone work at the top?+

Coverage is generally good around the buildings; it can be weaker on forested trail sections, so download an offline map before the Lugard Road walk.
