China hotels and foreigner registration: what to know before you book

Not every hotel accepts foreign guests, your passport is needed at check-in, and hotels report you to the police themselves. Staying with friends works differently.

China hotels and foreigner registration: what to know before you book

Szybka odpowiedź

  • Not every hotel in China accepts foreign guests, so check that the listing says foreigners are accepted or ask the hotel directly before booking.
  • You show your original passport at check-in, and the hotel registers your stay with the police automatically, so you do not visit a police station yourself.
  • If you stay with friends or in a private home, you must register with the local police within 24 hours, so check the local rules.

Hotels that accept foreign guests

Hotels in China need a connection to the police system to take foreign guests. Some properties, especially small budget hotels and guesthouses without that setup, will turn foreigners away even when rooms are free.

  • Look in the property details or policies for wording such as foreigners accepted, or 境外游客可入住.
  • If it is unclear, message the property before paying and keep the reply.
  • Prefer hotels with reviews from foreign guests, or larger chains, which usually take foreigners already.

Check-in and your passport

Staff will ask for your original passport, scan the data page and entry stamp, and may take a photo of your face. The system forwards the details to the police automatically, which is routine.

  1. 1Have your original passportA copy or phone photo is often not enough. Keep the passport in an easy-to-reach bag when you arrive.
  2. 2Use the passport nameThe booking name should match the passport, spelled in Latin letters.
  3. 3Collect your key and check the receiptAsk for a stay receipt if you need one, and note your room number and the hotel's Chinese address.

Staying with friends or in a private home

When you do not stay in a hotel, no one files the report for you. The guest or the host registers at the local police station, generally within 24 hours of arrival, bringing the passport.

Procedures and documents vary by city, and some areas also offer online registration. Confirm with the local police or the National Immigration Administration before you travel (last checked October 2026), and check with the Chinese embassy or consulate.

Where to book

Trip.com is a common choice because it has an English interface and shows which properties take foreigners. International booking sites also work, but compare the foreigner policy with the property itself.

Deposits and late check-in

  • Many hotels take a deposit at check-in, in cash or through a payment app. Amounts vary, so check with the property, keep the receipt and expect a refund at check-out.
  • Some use a card pre-authorisation instead, so carry a physical card as backup.
  • If you arrive late, tell the hotel your estimated arrival in advance, allow for flight or train delays, ask them to hold the room and check whether the front desk is staffed around the clock.

Hotel Wi-Fi and foreign apps

On mainland hotel Wi-Fi, foreign services such as Google, LINE, Facebook, Instagram and Gmail usually do not open. That is how the domestic network behaves, not a fault in your device.

A travel eSIM from a provider outside China usually routes data through a gateway outside the mainland, like roaming, which is why those apps often open on it. Nobody can guarantee every app on every network, so test first and keep your Thai SIM on for bank SMS.

Common front-desk problems

Even a confirmed booking can run into trouble. Most issues are fixable if you have the details ready and stay calm. Some staff may be unfamiliar with Thai passports, or the police reporting system may be briefly down.

  • The passport scanner fails: wait a moment or let staff key in the details by hand, then ask whether you need to come back to confirm.
  • The room differs from your booking: keep a screenshot of the reservation and take the discussion through the booking platform.
  • You are asked to go elsewhere: request a written reason or receipt to support a refund claim.
  • You want to change rooms or extend: ask in the morning, because rooms fill fast around long holidays.

Choosing an area near the metro

  • Beijing: Wangfujing or Qianmen, near metro stations and within reach of the Forbidden City.
  • Xi'an: inside or near the city wall, close to the Bell Tower and the Muslim Quarter.
  • Shanghai: East Nanjing Road or the Yu Garden area, close to the Bund.
A hotel within about 10 minutes' walk of a metro station keeps travel simple and reduces taxi reliance.

Before booking, open the map and check which metro exit is nearest and whether the area is comfortable to walk back through at night. Read recent reviews on cleanliness and noise, since hotels on main roads are often louder than expected.

If you are catching high-speed trains, choose a hotel that reaches the railway station on a single metro line, which lowers the risk of missing a departure.

Keep key documents safe. Use the in-room safe if there is one, and store a photo of your passport page and entry stamp separately on your phone or cloud in case you must contact your embassy about a lost document. A photo never replaces the original passport.
