Which New Zealand airport to fly into from Bangkok: AKL vs CHC vs ZQN vs WLG, connection hubs and getting into town
Picking the right airport for your route saves a lot of time in New Zealand. This guide compares the four main airports, connection routes from Bangkok and how to get into town from each.

- Fly into Auckland (AKL) for the North Island or a first visit, and Christchurch (CHC) or Queenstown (ZQN) for the South Island.
- As of October 2026 there is no non-stop Bangkok-Auckland flight; Thai travellers connect via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Sydney or Melbourne.
- An open-jaw ticket, such as into Auckland and out of Queenstown, saves you from doubling back.
Which New Zealand airport to use depends on the island you will explore. Auckland (AKL) is the main international gateway and suits the North Island. Christchurch (CHC) suits Canterbury and the South Island, Queenstown (ZQN) sits close to the mountains and fiords, and Wellington (WLG) is the capital and the Cook Strait ferry base. From Bangkok you currently need a connection.

Which New Zealand airport should you fly into?
Choose by island and main activity. This table sums up each airport's role, based on the airports and local tourism bodies.
| Airport | Najlepsze do | Warto wiedzieć |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland (AKL) | First trips, the North Island, Rotorua, Hobbiton | Main international gateway and the only airport with a transit area |
| Christchurch (CHC) | South Island trips, Lake Tekapo, Aoraki/Mount Cook, skiing at Mt Hutt | A popular start for South Island road trips |
| Queenstown (ZQN) | Wanaka, Milford Sound, ski fields | Direct flights from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Australian cities; about 15 minutes from downtown |
| Wellington (WLG) | The capital, museums, crossing between islands | Base for the Cook Strait ferry |

Are there direct flights from Bangkok to New Zealand?
Not yet. As of October 2026 there is no non-stop service between Bangkok and Auckland, so Thai travellers need at least one connection. Thailand's Government Public Relations Department reported on 21 August 2026 that Thai Airways plans to resume Bangkok-Auckland flights by March 2027, but no start date or schedule has been announced. Check the current details with Thai Airways before you plan around it.

Where can you connect on the way to New Zealand?
Thai travellers commonly connect through two groups of hubs. The first is Asian cities: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. The second is Australia: Sydney and Melbourne, where some routes continue to Christchurch or Queenstown without going through Auckland.
- Check the transit rules of your connection country, especially Australia, which has its own visa rules.
- On separate tickets you must collect bags and check in again, so leave a generous connection time.
- If you connect inside New Zealand, only Auckland has a transit area for NZeTA holders.

How can an open-jaw ticket help your New Zealand route?
An open-jaw ticket, flying into one city and out of another, saves you from driving or flying back to your starting point. One workable plan for Thai travellers: land in Auckland, tour the North Island, cross the Cook Strait from Wellington to Picton, drive south and fly home from Queenstown via Sydney or Melbourne. For a South Island focus, land in Christchurch, drive via Lake Tekapo to Queenstown and fly out of Queenstown. The Interislander and Bluebridge ferries take about 3.5 hours to cross.

How do you get from each airport into town?
Auckland (AKL)
Auckland Transport's orange AT AirportLink bus runs between the airport, Puhinui Station and Manukau about every 10 minutes. Board at Stop A (international) or Stop B (domestic); international to Puhinui takes about 18-20 minutes, then change to the train into the city. Pay with AT HOP, a contactless bank card or a mobile wallet; no cash. The alternative is the SkyDrive express to Hobson Street by the Sky Tower, booked online.
Christchurch (CHC)
Buses leave from the northern end of International Arrivals, by the Novotel at Door 9. Route 3 runs to the city and Sumner about every 10 minutes, Route 29 to the city via Fendalton about every 30 minutes, and Routes 8 and 125 also serve the airport. Pay with Motu Move or contactless; Metrocard and cash will be retired on 23 November 2026.
Queenstown (ZQN) and Wellington (WLG)
In Queenstown, Orbus buses run via the Frankton hub about every 15 minutes in the daytime and every 30 minutes in the evening. Bank and credit cards cannot be used; a Bee Card costs much less than cash and gives free transfers within 45 minutes. Buy one online, at Paper Plus in the terminal or from the driver. In Wellington, the electric Airport Express leaves from Door E every 10-20 minutes and takes about 25-35 minutes to the railway station. Pay with Snapper, cash or contactless; Wi-Fi on board is free.
Why do you need data from the moment you land?
During a connection in Singapore, Sydney or elsewhere, data lets you check gates and flight-change messages. After landing, several airport buses take contactless or mobile-wallet payments, and topping up a Bee Card online, booking SkyDrive or mapping the way to your hotel all need data. If you pick up a rental car, you want navigation from the car park. Installing an eSIM before you leave Thailand means it works as soon as you switch your phone on.
