Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it? What it covers, consecutive vs Flex, and the Half Fare Card

Szybka odpowiedź

  • The Swiss Travel Pass pays off when you make long trips on many days and use the included or discounted mountains; for a single-town stay, compare single tickets first.
  • The consecutive pass counts calendar days in a row, while Flex lets you choose your travel days within one month.
  • If you ride less, the one-month Swiss Half Fare Card, which reduces fares, is the alternative to compare.

Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it? It depends on how many days you really make long journeys. SBB and Switzerland Tourism say it gives unlimited travel on trains, buses and boats across the Swiss network, so it suits trips that change town often. For one base or a few short rides, compare single tickets and a Half Fare Card first.

What does the Swiss Travel Pass cover?

The pass covers trains, buses and boats, plus public transport in more than 90 towns and cities, according to SBB.

  • Panorama trains accept the pass, but seat reservations and supplements are paid separately.
  • The bundled Swiss Museum Pass gives free entry to more than 500 museums on travel days.
  • You can choose 1st or 2nd class.

Buyers must live permanently outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein, which covers Thai visitors. The pass is sold online by SBB and through the official Switzerland Tourism rail shop (rail.myswitzerland.com).

What is the difference between consecutive and Flex passes?

If you ask how a Swiss pass counts days: the standard pass runs for 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 consecutive days, while Flex gives the same numbers of travel days that you choose freely within one month.

Flex days are activated at activateyourpass.com or by scanning the QR code on the receipt. An activated day cannot be deactivated that day, and it is valid from midnight to 5 am the next morning. Flex leisure discounts apply only on activated travel days.

Are mountain railways free or discounted with the pass?

According to SBB, the Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos mountain railways are included. Numerous other mountain railways give a discount, and other RailAway offers get 50% off.

Jungfraujoch, Titlis and Gornergrat are not included but are discounted; check the current rate with each operator before you buy.

Each mountain operator sets its own discount and booking rules. Last checked November 2026; rules change, so confirm with SBB and the operator's website.

Is the Half Fare Card a good alternative?

The Swiss Half Fare Card is a one-month card for visitors living outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein that halves or reduces fares for trains, buses, boats, panorama trains, mountain railways and gondola lifts. It can be bought up to 11 months ahead at SBB.ch or a staffed public transport counter.

Another option is the Saver Day Pass, valid wherever the GA travelcard is valid on the chosen date until 5 am the next day. It must be bought at least one day and up to six months ahead, quotas apply so it can sell out, and it is sold at SBB.ch and in the SBB Mobile app.

How do you decide whether the pass is worth it for your trip?

Decide by counting the days with long journeys, not the days you spend in Switzerland. The SBB Mobile app lets you check single-ticket prices for each leg.

  1. 1List your route by dayMark which days change town, which climb a mountain, and which stay in one city.
  2. 2Check single tickets and discountsLook up current prices on the official SBB site and each mountain operator's page.
  3. 3Compare three optionsCompare a consecutive pass, a Flex pass and a Half Fare Card against single tickets, then pick the one that fits your long-journey days.

Zalety

  • Unlimited trains, buses and boats on pass days, with no single tickets to buy.
  • Rigi railways are included and many other mountain railways are discounted.
  • Flex suits trips that mix travel days with rest days in one town.

Wady

  • Panorama train seat reservations and some mountain routes cost extra.
  • With few long-journey days, single tickets or a Half Fare Card may suit better.
  • Flex passes cannot be shown in the SBB Mobile app.

What must you carry, and how do children travel?

You must show a valid passport or official ID card with the pass, and SBB does not accept copies or phone photos.

  • Children aged 6 to 15 travel free with the Swiss Family Card when accompanied by a parent holding a Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Children under 6 travel free without a ticket.
  • Travellers aged 16 to 24 pay a reduced youth rate.
Child and youth terms can change. Last checked November 2026; confirm on the official Switzerland Tourism and SBB pages before you buy.

How does your phone and internet connection help with the pass?

A consecutive pass bought online while logged in can be shown in the SBB Mobile app, so you need internet when you buy it, set it up and open it.

  • Activate Flex days online at activateyourpass.com before the first journey of the day, which needs mobile data.
  • SBB Mobile shows timetables, platforms and disruption alerts.
  • Seat reservations for panorama or mountain trains can be made on your phone with the operator.

An eSIM gives you mobile data from the airport through to your first pass day. For choosing a plan, see our Europe eSIM guides.
