Benin eSIM

Benin is a long, narrow country running from the Gulf of Guinea coast up towards the Sahel, so a normal trip is a series of road legs north from Cotonou, past Abomey and the stilt village at Ganvié, before the national parks in the far north. Arranging drivers, agreeing a price with a motorbike taxi and confirming a room happen mostly over WhatsApp, while maps and a French translation app stay open nearly all day. Your own data also means you are not depending on hotel Wi-Fi that goes down with the power.

This page carries 11 eSIM plans for Benin, riding on MTN Benin / Moov Africa Benin with 3G / 4G support. Install the profile at home before you fly; the plan starts counting when the phone first registers on a network at the destination.

Before you buy for Benin

Every Benin eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.

How much data you actually need

Roughly 500MB–1.5GB a day for maps, WhatsApp, translation and occasional photo uploads. Video calls or a tethered laptop on a work trip take that closer to 2GB a day.

When you land

Cadjehoun, the international airport at Cotonou (COO), takes essentially all international flights, and sea arrivals come through the Port of Cotonou. The busiest land crossings are Hillacondji to Togo in the west, Kraké and Sèmè to Nigeria in the east on the road to Lagos, and Malanville in the far north on the way to Niger. Get the line attached before you leave the terminal so you can confirm the driver who is meeting you.

Where coverage changes

The coastal belt around Cotonou, Porto-Novo and Ouidah works continuously, and the towns along the road north — Bohicon, Abomey, Parakou — behave normally. It thins on the long stretches between towns, in the Atakora hills of the north-west, and inside Pendjari National Park, where you should assume no service for the whole game drive. Download maps and save your guide's number to the device before leaving town, because that is where you will need both.

Cities travellers ask about

  • Cotonou — The largest city and main gateway, with the best coverage.
  • Porto-Novo — The official capital, just east of Cotonou.
  • Ouidah — A historic coastal town and the centre of Vodun culture.
  • Abomey — The World Heritage royal palaces of the Dahomey kingdom.
  • Ganvié — A stilt village on the lagoon, reached by boat from Cotonou.
  • Natitingou — The base for the northern parks, where signal starts thinning.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp, the main channel for drivers and accommodation
  • Gozem for motorbike and car rides around Cotonou
  • Yango as another way to hail a car in the cities
  • Google Maps with the country downloaded for offline use

Perguntas frequentes

How do I sort out a visa for Benin?+

Benin runs an official online visa application on a government website. Apply from home in advance and keep the approval both as a file on the phone and as a printout, because you may be asked for it at the border. Requirements on supporting documents, length of stay and any vaccination certificate you must show should be checked against the official site or the embassy before each trip rather than from an older travel blog.

How do people get around town, and is it safe?+

Motorbike taxis, known locally as zémidjans, are the backbone of getting around Cotonou; you agree the fare before getting on, or you use an app such as Gozem or Yango that shows the price up front, which removes the haggling and leaves a record of the ride. Ask for a helmet and avoid unfamiliar routes after dark. Between towns, shared minibuses and intercity coaches are the normal way to travel.

What do I need for connectivity up north in the parks?+

Assume no service for the whole time you are inside the parks. Load offline maps, save the lodge coordinates and your guide's number to the device, and tell people at home you will be reachable again once you are back in town. More importantly, check current official travel advice for the northern border regions before you plan the leg at all, because the security picture in some districts changes and that should shape the itinerary before connectivity does.

How do people pay for things in Benin?+

Cash in West African CFA francs still runs daily life, especially in markets, on motorbike taxis and in small shops, while larger hotels and some city businesses take cards. ATMs exist in Cotonou and the bigger towns but get scarcer as you go north, so withdraw ahead and break the money into smaller notes before leaving the city — small vendors frequently cannot change a large bill.

When does a Benin eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
