Namibia eSIM
Namibia is above all a long-distance driving trip on gravel: the legs between Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha each take hours and pass almost no settlement. Offline mapping is not a nice-to-have here but the primary tool. Just as important is telling your accommodation roughly when you will arrive, because many guest farms sit far off the main road and close their gates at dusk, and you cannot phone ahead from halfway down a farm track.

How much data you actually need
Roughly 500MB–1.2GB a day, since much of the time you are on roads with no service at all; usage spikes on the evenings you reach a town and upload a whole day of photos in one go.
When you land
The main gateway is Hosea Kutako International outside Windhoek (WDH), about forty minutes from the city; Eros (ERS) in town handles domestic and light aircraft, and Walvis Bay (WVB) serves the coast. Overland, Noordoewer and Ariamsvlei cross from South Africa, Buitepos is the post on the Trans-Kalahari route to Botswana, and Oshikango in the north is the crossing into Angola.
Where coverage changes
Signal is good in Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Oshakati and along the tarred B1 and B2. It thins or vanishes across the Namib around Sesriem and Sossusvlei, along the Skeleton Coast, in Kaokoland in the northwest, and on the many C- and D-numbered gravel roads that cut across large farmland. Plan on the basis that between two towns there may be no service at all for hours.

- Sesriem — The gateway to the Sossusvlei dunes, run to fixed gate opening times.

How should I prepare for long desert drives with no signal?+
The rule is simple: do not leave anything important living only in the cloud. Before you leave town, save the full route offline, copy your accommodation coordinates and phone numbers into a local note, photograph the hire car paperwork, and tell the lodge what time you departed. Refuel at every station rather than the next one and carry spare water — if you get a puncture out there, your realistic help is the next vehicle along, not a phone call.
Do the guest farms along the way have Wi-Fi?+
Many do, but treat it as a bonus. Remote farms typically run shared satellite internet, fine for messages and email but not for a long video call or a large upload. If you have real work to do, schedule it for a night in Windhoek or Swakopmund. On the nights in between, plan on doing no more than sending a short message to say you arrived safely, which is usually all the connection will comfortably carry.
Is there signal inside Etosha during game drives?+
Only in patches, and not something to rely on. Some of the main rest camps have service around the central buildings, but most of the game-drive loops and waterholes have none. Download the park map and the waterhole list to your device before you enter, and memorise the camp gate closing time, because arriving late leaves you shut outside with no way to call anyone — and you may not get out of the vehicle for any reason.
When does a Namibia eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
