Packing List by Trip Length: 3, 5, 7 and 14 Days

A longer trip does not mean doubling your bag. See what stays fixed, what scales with days, and what you should simply wash on the road.

Resposta rápida

  • What does not change with trip length is documents, medication, chargers and toiletries. Clothing grows only slightly, because you can wash.
  • From about 7 days, plan one wash cycle and pack roughly what you would for a 5-day trip.
  • Before closing the bag, check your own airline's baggage allowance and its rules on power banks and liquids.

Most people overpack because they assume a longer trip means more clothes. In practice, the bag for a 14-day trip looks almost identical to the bag for a 5-day trip; the difference is whether you plan to wash. This guide splits items into three groups: what stays fixed, what scales with days, and what depends on weather or destination.

The core idea: pack by wash cycles, not by days

Trousers or skirts can usually be worn two or three days, while underwear is a daily item. If you can wash every four or five days, the bag does not need to grow with the length of the trip. Many hotels offer laundry service, and many cities have coin laundries or drop-off shops, but availability and terms differ, so ask your accommodation before you go.

Two inexpensive helpers are a small zip bag with a little detergent and a travel clothesline. They let you wash underwear and T-shirts in the bathroom overnight, if your accommodation allows drying clothes in the room.

Items that stay fixed whatever the length

This group keeps the trip running, and it is the group people forget most often.

  • Passport with the remaining validity your destination requires, plus any visa or entry authorisation. Check the destination's official source.
  • Flight tickets, accommodation bookings and travel insurance policy, kept both on the phone and as an offline copy.
  • Regular medication in original packaging, with a prescription if you have one. Some countries restrict certain medicines strictly; ask your doctor and the destination's embassy.
  • Chargers, cables, a plug adapter suited to the destination, and a power bank carried in the cabin as your airline requires.
  • Two or more cards stored in separate places, plus a small amount of local cash for the first day.
  • Toiletries, sunscreen, and liquids in sizes your airline allows for hand luggage.

For more on documents, see our guide on what to pack and which documents to carry abroad.

The 3-day trip: one carry-on bag

A three-day trip suits a single carry-on. You skip the baggage belt and reduce the risk of a late bag. The things to watch are the liquid and sharp-object limits in hand luggage, which vary by airline and airport, so check before you go.

Choose clothes in one colour family so everything mixes, and skip washing entirely. Add one spare set of underwear and socks in case of rain or spills.

5 and 7 days: start thinking about laundry

A five-day trip can still fit in hand luggage if you pack light. Seven days is where people start debating a checked bag. A simple rule: if you carry items not allowed in the cabin or expect to bring gifts back, check one small bag, but clothing should not be the main reason.

For seven days, plan one wash around the middle and pack what you would for five. Leave roughly a fifth of the bag empty for things you buy along the way.

The 14-day trip: build a system, not a bigger pile

Two weeks is where overpacking hurts most, because you drag the bag across several cities. Aim to wash at least twice and favour quick-drying fabrics.

  • Divide the bag into zones: clean clothes, worn clothes, electronics, documents. You find things faster and repack one zone at a time.
  • On multi-city trips, keep one small pouch for an overnight stop so you do not unpack the main bag every night.
  • Plan for gifts by leaving space or carrying one foldable bag.
  • Keep medication and valuables in hand luggage whether or not you check a bag.

Connectivity gear: small but not to be forgotten

Before flying, check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked, then decide whether to install a data plan in advance or on arrival. The practical reason is that on landing you usually need maps, a ride app and OTP codes straight away. Keeping your main SIM active for bank SMS can still help, but check your carrier's roaming terms. Coverage and speed depend on the plan and the area, so nobody can guarantee them.

Also pack a spare charging cable, a power bank within airline rules, and earphones. See our guide on power bank rules on planes for the conditions.

Rules on liquids, power banks and prohibited items can change and differ by airline and airport. Check with your airline and the airport's website before every trip.

A packing sequence for the days before flying

  1. 1Two days before: lay everything outLay out every clothing item you plan to take and remove a quarter. Whatever you have not worn in the past three days is probably unnecessary.
  2. 2One day before: documents and chargingCheck the document list, charge every device, and download offline maps and tickets to your phone.
  3. 3Departure morning: weigh and checkWeigh the bag against your airline's terms. Move valuables, medication and spare batteries into hand luggage.

Perguntas frequentes

Does a 14-day trip need a big suitcase?+

Not always. If you wash once or twice, a medium bag is often enough. Season and activities matter; thick winter clothing or sports gear may need more room.

When is the best time to wash during a trip?+

When you stay in one place for two nights or more, so clothes can dry and you do not pack them wet. Ask your accommodation whether drying in the room or a laundry service is available.

Can I take my regular medication abroad?+

Generally yes in reasonable quantities, in original packaging and with a prescription, but some countries restrict certain medicines. Ask your doctor and the destination's embassy before travelling.

Should I check a bag or carry on?+

Short trips often fit in carry-on; longer trips or items not allowed in the cabin call for one checked bag. Check your airline's weight and size terms first, since they differ.
