Dubai is both a destination and one of the transit points travellers pass through most, often for a couple of days between flights. The city is built around the metro and ride-hailing; walking outdoors is limited for much of the summer. Coverage is dense, reaching tunnels, malls and high floors alike. One thing to know beforehand: voice and video calling through some chat apps has long been restricted on networks in the country, so check the position before you rely on it.

Dubai International (DXB) has three terminals, of which Terminal 3 is the largest and connects straight to a metro station; some low-cost carriers use Al Maktoum (DWC), which is far to the south — check the airport code on your ticket. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the aircraft, because after immigration you choose between the metro, the taxi rank and app-based pickup bays. The drive in holds signal even through the highway tunnels.

Both the Red and Green metro lines carry service in the stations and between them, and the big malls and high floors behave normally. The clear change is out toward the desert: safari camps several kilometres off the highway are often thin and sometimes have nothing at all, as do parts of the eastern mountain road toward Hatta. The abra across the Creek is short enough to stay connected, and the long Jumeirah beachfront is good along almost all of it.

A day here runs about 1–2GB with maps, ride-hailing and e-tickets open throughout. Tether a laptop during a long layover or stream every evening and you are closer to 3GB. Filming from an observation deck and uploading it on the spot is the cost people forget to count. Plan video calls home in advance, because some calling services may not work as usual in this country.

• Downtown Dubai — Around the tallest tower and an enormous mall, where the indoor walkways are long enough that in-mall maps genuinely help; allow ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the metro.
• Dubai Marina & JBR — Waterfront towers with a promenade and the beach right behind; strong throughout, though the density of buildings can put a ground-floor restaurant's pin slightly off.
• Deira & Bur Dubai — The older quarters either side of the Creek, home to the gold and spice souqs; the abra crosses faster than a car, and in the souq lanes it helps to remember which gate you came in by.
• Business Bay & DIFC — The office-and-hotel district for business visitors; steady enough for online meetings and close to several metro stops.

• A desert safari — About an hour out of the city into the dunes, where the line thins steadily and some camps have almost nothing; tell whoever is waiting your expected return before you leave the hotel.
• Hatta — An hour and a half east into mountains and a reservoir; the road hugs the hills so the line cuts briefly here and there, and the route passes checkpoints, so carry your travel documents.
• Abu Dhabi as a day trip — Ninety minutes on a highway with continuous coverage, comfortable for navigating or working en route; check the closing times of what you plan to visit before you go.
