The ride in keeps service since almost the whole route is above ground, then falls away inside the station hall, with its steel frame and its crowds.

• The Alster lakes — The paths around the lake are open and steady — a good place to take a call on the move or clear a photo backlog from a bench.
• Altona and the Elbe bank — The western riverside path is good the whole way, though the stairs and ramps down to the sandy shore weaken once you are below the bank.
