A typical visitor uses around 400MB–1GB a day on messaging, maps and photos from the lagoon. Uploading snorkelling clips or calling home each evening takes it nearer 1.5GB a day.

The only airport is Dzaoudzi–Pamandzi (DZA) on Petite-Terre, served mainly from Paris, Reunion and regional cities. From there you drive to the jetty and take the barge across the channel to Mamoudzou on the main island; the crossing itself is short, but the timetable matters, especially late at night and at weekends. Turn the line on as you land so you can confirm with whoever is meeting you on the Mamoudzou side.

Service is best around Mamoudzou and along the eastern coast road of Grande-Terre, and across Petite-Terre, which is small and densely settled. It thins noticeably in the hills at the centre of the main island around Mount Benara and Choungui, along the southern coast near Saziley, and out on the water when a boat heads for the middle of the lagoon or the white sandbank well offshore. Download the map and save the boatman's number before you leave the jetty.

Does the barge between the two islands run all day?+
It runs often through the day and very frequently at rush hour, but the gaps get long late at night and at weekends. If your flight lands in the evening, or you have an early departure to get back for, check the current timetable when you plan and arrange for someone to meet you on the far side. Waiting at the jetty at night with no fallback is not a pleasant way to start or end a trip.
What currency does Mayotte use, and how far do cards get me?+
The currency is the euro, since Mayotte is a French department, and shops in Mamoudzou, supermarkets and most restaurants take cards. Out in the smaller villages, at the markets and when paying a boat owner, cash is still very much needed. Withdraw what you need while you are in town before heading north or south, because there are few machines outside the main centre and they are not always in service.
What should I check about conditions on the island before going?+
Two things: the weather and what is actually operating. The southern-hemisphere cyclone season runs roughly November to April, and during it you should read the Meteo-France bulletins daily. The island is also still recovering from the severe cyclone of December 2024, which affected accommodation and some services, so confirm directly with your lodging and your boat operator that they are running before you commit to dates.
