What Langkawi is like on a phone

Langkawi is not one island but a cluster; most people base themselves on the main island and take day boats out to the smaller ones. Visitors are families in resorts, couples on honeymoon, and people stopping by because it is a duty-free zone. The main island has good roads, a port town and a developed beach strip, and coverage across those is comfortable. What makes Langkawi different is that almost every signature activity here takes you away from the places the masts serve.

When you land

Langkawi airport (LGK) sits on the west of the main island, close to the beach strip where most people stay; turn the line on before leaving the building to order a car or confirm a hotel pick-up. The other common arrival is by ferry from the mainland jetties to the north or from Penang, landing at Kuah in the southeast. On the crossing the line fades noticeably in mid-channel and returns as you approach the jetty. If you have booked a transfer, confirm the time before you board, since boats run early or late with the sea state.

Where coverage changes

Kuah town and the Pantai Cenang strip are well served, with shops and accommodation running continuously, and the ring road works nearly all the way round except where it cuts into the wooded hills. Two things behave differently. The first is the cable car up the northwestern peak: suspended above the canopy, the line is unreliable, returning at the top station. The second is the mangrove boat tour in the east, which runs into narrow channels walled by tall limestone; in there the signal genuinely goes and comes back when you emerge into open sea. On island-hopping days it thins over the water and improves at whichever island the boats all land on.

What a day here costs in data

An ordinary day here is light, about 600MB to 1.2GB, because the ring road is simple and the map need not stay open. The figure spikes on island-hopping or cable-car days, when people film all day and upload the batch back at the hotel. Book boat tours, check cable-car times and look at the forecast in the morning from somewhere with a good line, rather than standing at the jetty where everyone is competing for the same cell at once.

• Pantai Cenang — The beach strip of restaurants and shops; good on the sand and on the road behind it, and the right place to finish bookings and payments before you sail anywhere.
• Kuah town — The working port town with shops and the ferry jetty; ordinary town-grade coverage, and where people settle online errands before moving over to the beach side.
• Datai Bay — The northwestern corner, rainforest running down to the sand and resorts spaced far apart; noticeably thinner than the south, especially on the road beneath heavy canopy.
• Tanjung Rhu — A white beach in the north with limestone stacks standing offshore; the sand is fine, but the moment a boat takes you round behind those rocks the conditions change.

Day trips out of the city

• The Kilim mangroves — Small boats run into narrow channels between tall limestone walls, and in there the line genuinely goes; agree the return time with the boatman before you set off and do not schedule anything for the hours you are inside.
• Island hopping — Boats run out to the island lake and a few small beaches; on the open-water legs the line thins to the point where nothing sends, returning in patches at whichever island the crowd lands on.
• The cable car and sky bridge — Up the northwestern peak; suspended above the canopy the line is unreliable and it works again at the upper station where people and buildings are. Buy tickets ahead, because the mid-morning queue is usually long.
