How much data you actually need

A city-only trip tends to use about 700MB–1.5GB a day, since distances are short and malls have Wi-Fi. If you upload clips each evening or tether a laptop, allow around 2GB a day instead.

When you land

Hong Kong International (HKG) at Chek Lap Kok is the main gateway. Beyond it, you can cross by land at Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau and Shenzhen Bay, drive the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, take high-speed rail into West Kowloon station, or arrive by ferry from Macau at Sheung Wan or the China Ferry Terminal.

Where coverage changes

Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the urban New Territories are densely covered, including MTR stations, running tunnels and the cross-harbour tunnels. What thins out is the hiking country: the MacLehose Trail, the summit of Tai Mo Shan, the Sai Kung country parks, and pockets of the outlying islands such as south Lantau, Lamma and Cheung Chau.

Cities travellers ask about

  • Central — The business core, strong at street level and on the elevated walkways.
  • Tsim Sha Tsui — Busy along the harbourfront; can slow during the evening light show.
  • Mong Kok — Extremely dense night markets; speeds swing at peak hours.
  • Tung Chung and Lantau — Fine in town and on the cable car, patchy on the hill trails.
  • Sai Kung — Usable at the waterfront, weak inside the country park and outer islands.

常見問題

Does a Hong Kong plan keep working in mainland China or Macau?+

Not automatically. Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China count as separate service areas even though the border is a few minutes apart by train. If your trip mixes Hong Kong with Shenzhen or Macau, check the area list on the plan itself before buying rather than assuming geography settles it.

Does data really work inside MTR stations and tunnels?+

Yes. The MTR has in-station and in-tunnel coverage, so you can follow a map, answer messages or check which exit you need while the train is moving. Speeds dip at rush hour when carriages are packed, but the connection generally holds right through an urban journey.

Do I need a VPN in Hong Kong?+

Most visitors do not set one up just to use everyday apps in Hong Kong, because the territory runs its own internet regime separate from the mainland. The people who should think about it are those continuing across the border to Shenzhen or Guangzhou on the same trip — set up any tools and accounts while you are still on the Hong Kong side.

What should I prepare for the outlying islands and hiking trails?+

Download an offline map of the route before you leave the urban area, and screenshot the last ferry times. Along the MacLehose ridge or the inner Sai Kung coast the signal drops for long stretches, so relying on a live search halfway round is riskier than it looks.

When does a Hong Kong eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
