About 1–2GB a day covers maps, ride-hailing and photo uploads. If you are working online from Bali or taking video calls daily, budget nearer 2.5–3GB a day.
When you land
The main gateways are Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta (CGK) and Ngurah Rai in Bali (DPS), alongside Surabaya (SUB), Medan (KNO), Makassar (UPG), Lombok (LOP) and Yogyakarta (YIA). By sea, the common routes are the ferries from Singapore to Batam and Bintan, and the fast boats from Bali to the Gili Islands and Nusa Penida.
Where coverage changes
Java and Bali are broadly covered in the towns and along the main roads. Head out to the Gili Islands, Flores around Labuan Bajo, Raja Ampat, or the interior of Kalimantan and Papua and the signal thins right out or disappears. Boat crossings between islands are usually offline the whole way.

Do I have to fill in the customs declaration online before arriving?+
Yes. Indonesia asks travellers to complete an electronic customs declaration and show the resulting QR code at the checkpoint. You can file it before departure within the window the system allows. The safe move is to complete it on Wi-Fi at your departure airport and save the QR code as an image in case your line has not attached yet.
Can I use Gojek or Grab everywhere in Bali?+
Not everywhere. Some neighbourhoods and beaches in Bali have arrangements with local transport groups, so app drivers will not pick up on the spot and may ask you to walk out to a meeting point. The easiest fix is to ask your accommodation whether app pickups work there, and leave extra time to reach the pickup point.
Does data work on the fast boat to the Gilis or Nusa Penida?+
Out on the water you will usually have nothing for the whole crossing, with service returning as you approach the destination pier. Screenshot your boat ticket, your accommodation address and an island map before boarding, since on the smaller islands you often walk to your stay with no cars to hail.
Is Bali workable for working online?+
The areas where remote workers cluster — Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud — already have cafés and stays set up for it. Mobile data is a useful backup when the property's Wi-Fi stutters. If you are staying up north or on a clifftop away from town, test the signal before committing to anything with live meetings.
When does a Indonesia eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
