How much data you actually need

About 1–2GB a day for maps, rides and photos. If you are island-hopping and uploading video every night, or sharing a hotspot with travel companions, budget above that so the allowance lasts the full trip.

When you land

The main airports are Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX) and Samui (USM). Turn the eSIM on as you land so you can order a ride in an app or check the airport rail link before you walk out of the terminal.

Where coverage changes

Bangkok and the provincial cities have wide 5G, including inside BTS and MRT stations. Outer islands, national parks and parts of the ferry crossings fall back to 4G or drop entirely, so download the map area and save your boat tickets to the phone before you leave the pier.

Do visitors need to register an eSIM in Thailand?+

Traveller plans are prepared to work as soon as you install the profile and switch the line on, so there is no counter visit with documents the way a traditional prepaid SIM purchase works. What you should do is install while you still have Wi-Fi and keep the order confirmation email, in case you need to contact the team later.

How is the signal on Koh Tao or Koh Phangan?+

Villages, piers and the main beaches are usually fine, but on the ferry crossing and in small bays shielded by hills the signal weakens or disappears for stretches. Save your boat ticket, your accommodation address and an offline map to the phone before you set out, so nothing depends on being online mid-crossing.

Can a Thailand plan continue into Laos or Cambodia?+

A single-country plan covers Thailand only; once you cross a border the phone attaches to a network outside the coverage area. If the itinerary spans several countries, choose an ASEAN or Asia regional plan that lists them all from the start, so you are not hunting for Wi-Fi to buy another plan at a border crossing.

When does a Thailand eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
