Driving in Switzerland and Austria from Thailand: licence, IDP, motorway vignettes and winter tyres

快速解答

  • Thai drivers in Switzerland should carry an IDP with the Thai licence, and in Austria a licence not written in German is valid only together with an IDP or a translation.
  • Switzerland uses an e-vignette linked to the licence plate, and Austria sells only digital vignettes from 1 December 2026.
  • Austria requires winter tyres from 1 November to 15 April when there is snow, slush or ice on the road.

Thai drivers in Switzerland should carry an international driving permit (IDP) or an official translation with their Thai licence, while Austria requires an IDP or translation for any licence not written in German. Both countries require a motorway vignette, and Austria sells vignettes only in digital form from 1 December 2026.

Can Thai drivers use a Thai licence in Switzerland and Austria?

Yes, with supporting documents. The Swiss Embassy in Thailand says foreign drivers may drive in Switzerland with a valid national licence, or with a valid IDP shown together with their national licence. Without an IDP, the driver must carry an official translation in French, German, Italian or English, and the name must appear in Roman script on both. Carrying an IDP is the safer choice.

The UN Treaty Collection shows Thailand acceded to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic on 15 August 1962 and ratified the 1968 Vienna Convention on 1 May 2020. Austria ratified the 1968 Convention on 11 August 1981 and Switzerland on 11 December 1991. For how to get a permit, read “What an International Driving Permit is, how to get one, and whether it really lets you drive abroad”.

Licence rules can change. Confirm them with the embassy or the official government site of each country before you travel (last checked November 2026).

What is the Swiss motorway vignette and how do you buy it?

A vignette is the permit for using Swiss motorways. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) says it applies to motor vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 t, heavier vehicles pay the PSVA charge instead, and Switzerland has no short-stay vignette.

  • The e-vignette is linked to the licence plate and bought through the BAZG Via portal (e-vignette.ch), and the adhesive sticker is still sold.
  • A vignette is valid from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year.
  • BAZG warns about fake sites and says to buy only through official channels; check the current price on the official site.

When does Austria's vignette go digital, and what is the 18th-day rule?

From 1 December 2026 Austria sells vignettes only in digital form, and austria.info says the 2026 sticker stays valid until 31 January 2027. Austrian motorways and expressways need a vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 t, and it must be valid before you join the road.

類型何時開始
1-day and 10-dayValid immediately
2-month and annual (online, private consumers)Valid from the 18th day after purchase, because of the withdrawal period
Section toll productsValid immediately

ASFINAG says the digital vignette is linked to the licence plate. The ASFINAG toll shop and the free ASFINAG app sell it, and austria.info adds about 4,500 outlets, including motoring clubs, petrol stations and Trafiken, plus machines at service areas and border crossings. Because 2-month and annual vignettes start on the 18th day, buy those well ahead or choose a 1-day or 10-day vignette.

Which Austrian roads charge a separate section toll?

ASFINAG and austria.info name five roads with a separate toll.

  • A 9: Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnels
  • A 10: Tauern and Katschberg tunnels
  • A 11: Karawanken tunnel
  • A 13: Brenner
  • S 16: Arlberg tunnel

ASFINAG explains that these segments can be used without a vignette because the toll is paid at toll stations or in advance, while austria.info lists them as separate tolls. Open both official pages to see the current conditions and price of each segment before you set off.

Do you need winter tyres in Austria?

Yes, when road conditions require it. According to oesterreich.gv.at, from 1 November to 15 April cars up to 3.5 t must have winter tyres on all wheels when there is snow, slush or ice on the road.

  • Snow chains on at least two drive wheels are an alternative, but only on a more or less continuous layer of snow or ice.
  • Tyres count as winter tyres if marked M+S, M.S., M&S or with the snowflake symbol, and the tourism office gives a minimum tread depth above 4 mm.
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on open roads, 100 or 130 km/h on expressways as signed, and 130 km/h on motorways, unless signs say otherwise.
  • Carry a first-aid kit, a warning triangle and a reflective vest, and the general blood alcohol limit is below 0.5 per mille.
Tyre and traffic rules can change. Confirm them on the official sites and with your rental company before departure (last checked November 2026).

Do you need both vignettes when driving from Switzerland to Austria?

Yes. Switzerland and Austria have separate vignette systems, so a car crossing from Switzerland into Austria needs a Swiss vignette for Swiss motorways and an Austrian digital vignette for Austrian motorways and expressways, as the two official rule sets imply. The Arlberg tunnel (S 16) on the main Vorarlberg–Tyrol route carries its own section toll.

If you would rather not drive, SBB lists six direct trains a day from Zürich HB to Vienna in 7 hours 52 minutes, and several direct ÖBB Railjet connections a day from Zürich HB to Innsbruck in about 3.5 hours.

Why does mobile data matter when you drive in Europe?

Navigation, buying a vignette and getting help all rely on mobile data.

  • The Swiss e-vignette is bought through e-vignette.ch, and the Austrian vignette through the ASFINAG toll shop or app, both of which need internet.
  • Download offline maps as a backup; setup is covered in “Offline maps that actually work when the data runs out”.
  • Emergency numbers in Austria: 112 (European number), 133 police, 122 fire, 144 ambulance and 140 mountain rescue. In Switzerland: 117 police, 118 fire, 144 ambulance and 112.
