What border officers ask in Europe: what to have ready at your first Schengen airport

快速解答

  • Border guards may ask for your passport, visa, proof of accommodation, return ticket, and an explanation of the purpose and conditions of your stay.
  • After the first external Schengen border check, there are generally no further checks between Schengen countries, but carry your passport.
  • Entry can be refused even with a visa under the Schengen Borders Code, so answer truthfully and carry your documents.

Your Europe, the EU's official portal, says border guards may ask for an invitation letter, proof of accommodation, a return or round-trip ticket, an explanation of the purpose and conditions of your stay, and proof of enough money. There is no fixed list of questions, so carry your real documents and answer truthfully.

What do border officers usually ask about?

Questions tend to follow the topics Your Europe lists: why you are visiting, where you will stay, for how long, and how you will pay. The table matches each topic with what to keep ready on your phone or on paper.

  • The reason for your trip and your main destination
  • Where you will stay and for how many days
  • How you will leave the Schengen area
  • How you will pay for the trip

Your answers should match the documents you gave when you applied for the visa, because a mismatch can lead to more questions. If you do not understand a question, ask the officer to repeat it or use simple English.

Topic that may come up應該事先準備什麼
Purpose and length of the tripA simple itinerary and the visa showing the permitted days
Where you will stayAccommodation booking or an invitation letter
How you will leaveReturn or round-trip ticket
Enough moneyFinancial proof like that used for the visa application
護照Valid for 3 months after you leave and issued within the previous 10 years
Rules change. This information was last checked in November 2026. Officers at each border make their own decisions, so check the current document list with the embassy of your main destination.

What happens when you land at your first Schengen airport?

The external border is where you enter Schengen from outside the area, which may be your destination airport or the first connecting airport. The usual steps are below.

  1. 1Follow signs to the non-EU lanePick the lane for non-EU passport holders.
  2. 2Present passport and visaThe officer may ask about purpose, accommodation and onward travel.
  3. 3Go through EESYour first crossing includes a facial photo. Visa holders do not give new fingerprints because they are already in VIS, and there is no stamp.
  4. 4Collect bags and exitOnce cleared, you are inside the Schengen area.

The EU says refusing to give biometrics means you will be refused entry. Self-service kiosks need a biometric passport, though other passports are still accepted. The system itself is covered in our separate EES and ETIAS guide.

Are there border checks between Schengen countries?

Generally no. Your Europe says that once you pass the external Schengen border check, there are usually no further checks when you travel between Schengen countries. Countries may bring back temporary checks, so always carry your passport.

The European Commission says reintroducing internal border controls is temporary and a last resort. The countries with notified controls in the list opened in November 2026 were Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Austria, Germany, Italy and Poland, and the list changes often. Before you cross by land, train or coach, check the latest list and allow extra time in case a check takes place.

What should you know about connecting flights in Schengen?

If you fly from outside Schengen and connect to another Schengen country, the first airport where you arrive is where you cross the external border, so have your documents ready there. Flights inside Schengen after that usually involve no further checks. Transit rules differ by airport, so check with your airline and the embassy before you book.

Can you still be refused entry with a visa?

Yes. Your Europe says entry can be refused under the Schengen Borders Code even with a visa, and an appeal does not suspend the refusal. Give information that matches your visa application, and keep your documents at hand.

Italy's official tourism portal Italia.it gives the same reminder: the passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. Check the expiry date before you book flights.

How do your phone and data help at immigration?

Bookings often live in email or apps, and pulling up a hotel reservation can be slow without data on landing. Download copies to your phone before departure, and have data working right after the border for rides, hotel contact and maps.

For setup and comparing options, see “Preparing for a Multi-Country Europe Trip: Which Internet to Use, SIM or eSIM” and “Offline maps that actually work when the data runs out”, or start with the Europe eSIM plans through the button below.
