What MIA is like

Miami is where the Caribbean and South America change planes, not simply the airport of a beach city. What differs here is the sheer number of connecting passengers, so the shared network carries thousands of people sitting out a layover at the same time. The arrivals hall and the waiting areas for cars are also noticeably weaker than the departure gates. If you need to confirm a room or coordinate a pick-up while walking out, your own line saves you from going back inside to stand near an access point.

A short elevated train links the terminal to a combined transport centre where car rental, rail and buses sit together, and from there the city rail network reaches downtown Miami. Most people heading for the beach take a car instead, because that means crossing a causeway to the barrier island; the distance is modest but the traffic on the bridges in the evening is not. If you are driving south towards the island chain, download an offline map, because the long bridges over open water have places where signal genuinely thins. First-day data usually goes on the map, a ride app, and translating a menu written in Spanish.
