There is no airport. Most people fly into Rimini (RMI), Bologna (BLQ) or Ancona (AOI), take a train to Rimini station, then the Rimini–San Marino coach that leaves from outside it and climbs up in about 45–50 minutes. Nobody checks passports at the frontier; if you want the souvenir stamp you buy it at the tourist office in the historic centre.

The lived-in parts — Serravalle, Borgo Maggiore and the historic centre on the ridge — are compact and behave normally. It wobbles on the switchback road up the mountain, on the cable car from Borgo Maggiore, and inside the thick stone of the three towers and their passages. Near the edges of the country a handset will often sit on an Italian network instead, which is what decides your charges.
