Tuvalu is a destination we do not carry a plan for, so the sensible approach is to treat the entire stay as an offline stretch and build the trip around that rather than hope for a workaround. It is nine low coral atolls spread across a wide piece of the Pacific, served by a handful of flights a week, and its internet has long arrived by satellite rather than through a subsea cable. What actually helps here is preparation on the device itself: maps, tickets, booking confirmations and phone numbers saved offline, and people at home told in advance that replies will be slow.

Plan on very little for the whole visit: at best short messages while you are on Funafuti, and effectively nothing once you are on a boat or out on the other atolls. Anything that means uploading photos or joining a call is better done in Fiji, before you fly in or after you fly out.

The only air gateway is Funafuti International (FUN) on Fongafale islet, reached by a small aircraft from Nausori airport at Suva (SUV) in Fiji on only a few days each week. The runway sits in the middle of the settlement and fills with people walking and playing sport in the evening when no flight is due. The outer islands have no airstrips at all: they are reached by the government passenger-and-cargo ships out of Funafuti wharf, an overnight-to-several-day passage whose schedule moves with the sea and with the cargo being carried.

Whatever mobile service exists is concentrated on Fongafale, the narrow strip of Funafuti atoll that holds the airstrip, the government offices and almost every guesthouse. Step off it and the picture changes completely: the hours or days at sea on the inter-island ship, outer atolls such as Nanumea, Vaitupu and Nukulaelae, and even the far side of Funafuti lagoon that you cross by small boat should all be treated as places where you cannot reach anyone until you are back in the main settlement.

Why is there no eSIM plan for Tuvalu?+
Because we do not carry a product for Tuvalu, there is nothing to buy in advance for that part of the trip. The direct route is to ask the guesthouse or the contact you have arranged in Funafuti what is available once you arrive, and to finish anything that needs the internet while you are still in Fiji. If your itinerary passes through Fiji before or after, arrange a plan for that leg on its own.
How do you get to Tuvalu, and how often do flights run?+
Almost everyone flies in from Suva in Fiji on a small aircraft that lands at Funafuti (FUN), and it operates on only a few days each week. If a flight is missed or moved, the next one may be several days away, so leave buffer nights in Fiji on both sides, never book a tight onward international connection on the same day, and keep the ticket confirmation saved on the phone because you may not be able to open it online while you are there.
If I go out to the other islands, how should I handle staying in touch?+
The outer islands are reached by the government ship out of Funafuti, an overnight-to-several-day passage whose timing depends on the sea and on cargo, and you should assume you cannot reach anyone for the whole of it. Before you sail, tell someone at home and your guesthouse in Funafuti which island you are going to, which ship you are on and when you expect to be back, then add a few days of slack because the boat often returns later than planned. Load enough offline reading, music and maps to cover the crossing.
Can I pay by card in Tuvalu, or should I bring cash?+
Plan the trip as a cash trip. The currency in use is the Australian dollar, so bring enough before you leave Fiji: paying by card and withdrawing cash are not things to build a plan around here, and when the connection drops there is no online fallback either. Carry enough for your room, food and boat fares, plus a reserve in case a delayed flight keeps you there several extra days.
